Chuck, You will enjoy seeing Hal Rugg play. I was fortunate to see him several times and he was a great steel player. The Loretta Lynn albums were his biggest credit but he was a fantastic jazz player as well. I suggest buying anything you can of his personal projects, and especially the Rugg/Emmons video recorded at the Bell Cove. I promise you that you will not be disappointed. |

Chuck,
I had the pleasure of meeting Hal on a couple of occasions, a super player, and super nice person. He could do it all from slow, and smooth to jazz, to wide open fast.Nobody, but nobody could top his version of "Take Me As I Am"

Hi Chuck,
I met Hal Rugg at Jeff Newman's Steel guitar college in 1978. I was totally blown away by this man. He had all the qualities of a great person. You wouldn't want a more down to earth person.
Despite his obvious high stature in the pedal steel world, he was not into himself one bit. He shared so willingly. I remember one little incident...we were all flocked around him as he was playing and teaching. I said Hal, please play the intro to One's on the Way.
Bang..there was, not a split second hesitation. That well-known intro came out as sure as shootin'.
Hal was also a great teacher. He had those calm qualities it takes to teach a crowd of people who are all different in their perceptions.
Hal, here's to you.
With respect,
Bent
Let this my little speech be my testimonial to one of the greatest and most memorable people I have met in my life. |
