I think Swinging Doors would probably be Ralph Mooney on steel guitar and Phil Baugh on lead. I Think I'll Just Stay Here and Drink would be Norm Hamlet on steel.........JH in Va.

"Swinging Doors" is for sure Mooney on Steel, but I think it might have been James Burton on Lead Guitar rather than Phil Baugh. I think I read somewhere in the archives that Buddy may have played steel on the album that had "I Think I'll Just Stay Here and Drink", but I'm not sure... and I believe Steve Hinson stated that Reggie Young had played the lead guitar on that particular cut.

Sorry guys, I stand corrected on "swinging doors". I was just going by the session notes that are listed in the "Untamed Hawk" box set from Bear Family Records. Thanks for the clarification Steve.

Reggie on "I'll Just Stay Here and Drink"?.... Reggie Young, one of the most tasteful players I've ever heard in my life. My favorite ride of his would have to be the Haggard recording of "That's The Way Love Goes"...... I read an interview in a guitar magazine once where he said that in that tune and most other things he cut with Haggard that he used just a Telecaster and an MXR DynaComp compressor that Jerry Reed had given him. He said that Reed brought it over to his house one day and said "use this thing on everything you cut" and it really worked.........JH in Va.

For what I think is far and away Hag's best recording of "I Think I'll Just Stay Here And Drink", get Live At Billy Bob's TX (Motorcycle Cowboy). That's the first of two Live at BB's Hag CDs. Norm and the entire band got to play a whole lot that night, and the production is excellent.

Swinging Doors was Moon and Phil Baugh. There is no steel in "Think I'll Just Stay Here and Drink", but Reggie Young played the guitar. I'm referring to the original recordings. You can find all 500+ notes of "Think I'll Just Stay Here and Drink" and the Phil Baugh version of "Swinging Doors" on tablature & video instruction on my "Honky-Tonk Guitar Essentials Course". at http://terrydownsmusic.com/htge/htge_video.html

That is some of my favorite stuff. I talked to Ralph Mooney about those sessions. He said they were a lot of fun. I learned much more about Roy Nichols from Ralph.
