Ron, my guess is the seller does not know what serial number means or it is a scam.
why else would someone not give out a serial number.
IMO it would help sell thye item regardless of vintage status.
now if I was asjked for my ssn.
well, fagetaboutit. |

By not posting the exact serial number, he avoids the risk of being accused, rightly or otherwise, of dealing a "hot" item(i.e. previously "borrowed"). There's as muich information in the numbers he's divulged as you're going to get anyway.
Looks like a very slightly newer correct Fender case.
Probably harder to Hijack a listing without the serial number.

Sometimes dealers, to avoid issues with items acquiredlegally but with a history of a theft, will withhold a portion of a SN to avoid having instruments taken back. This is only possible in a small number of states, and dealers are supposed to have a bond to cover such losses, but it is far easier just to hold back part of the SN so it cannot be confirmed. |

Why Jody, the seller has really good feedback.?

Hi Baz, from the comments above made by Forum members, I dont think I would take a chance, that's my opinion, I have nothing to lose nor gain, I don't want Ron to get invloved into something he doesnt't need. If it were me, I would not get invloved. If the seller has good feedback, then why all the negative comments as posted above?. |

A lot of vintage guitar dealers do not reveal the complete serial number. They will list, for example, Serial Number: A 372 XXX
The buyer can see that the number series is correct, but he cannot identify That Exact Guitar. If you search for rare guitars on eBay you will discover that about 20% of the Dealer auctions do that. Here is one of many examples.
I've always wondered why they hide part of the serial number. I guess they are trying to prevent frauduent claims by crooks who say that That serial number is their guitar's number... claiming that the guitar was stolen from them. For whatever reason, a lot of dealers are doing this now, especially with high-end vintage guitars.
Regarding the Fender Quad in question, here is what the seller posted in answer to a question:
"for the sake of privacy I'd rather not reveal the exact serial number. However, it is in the format 00xxx, and the xxx is a number less than 400. Hope this helps! Thanks, Dave."
The seller has 4607 feedbacks, 99.8% positive. I think this one is pretty safe. _________________ My Site / My YouTube Channel

The problem with this practice is that it makes legitimately stolen guitars hard to track. I think Ebay should require that information to be given, especially when someone asks for it. If you had a guitar that was stolen, and you could prove that you owned serial number xxxx or whatever, and you saw an identical guitar appear on Ebay in the following weeks, would you not want to be sure that it was not your guitar? Believe me, you would be surprised at how many goods appearing on Ebay are stolen. |
