Just noticed that ever since I started here that Texas is well represented here in numbers, more than any other state.

I know....I know....Texas is BIG!

I went to school for two years in Abilene Texas. I still have great friends from there, and that was right at 20 years ago. It gets pretty bleak after you get away from Dallas though. Lots of mesquite bushes and oil rigs!

I drove 18 wheels into Texas a few times to D/FW and San Antonio. Mean "bears" there! Once I came back to CA via the west side (Del Rio and up) and kinda enjoyed that. Parked overnight one time "West of the Pecos" at Roy Bean's museum in Langtry. That was cool....

FWIW,

Dennis

Back in the 1950's they used to sell postcards at some of the "tourist attractions" along the highways that crossed this big ol' state.

The closest thing to a tree in West Texas is a fence post on a flat bed trailer on the highway! Very Happy
But East Tx.,,,now that's some pretty country!
I was born and raised in S.E. Ok. 5 miles from Tx. and 30 miles from Ark. Sure is "different" here in Az. Shocked

As the miles go, steelers are few and far between.
Yep, it's a big state. "And the road goes on forever."
I'm going to make the Dallas show someday.

Wally Moyers lives here in Lubbock; I heard a singer say the other day that he gets the best vocal sound around in his studio; could be from being a steel player. While in Austin, before the steel bug bit, I missed meeting lots of players, like Ricky Davis and Herb Steiner. My loss, but I'll be back down there sometime. Only 7 hours away (that's how we count distance here).

Somebody said you can trust people in West Texas; there aren't many trees to hide behind.

Ah, the famous West Texas wind. You know what they say:

IMHO I believe Texas if not already, should be the steel guitar capitol of the world. Not only do we have a butt load of steel players but some of the finest steel players around. Now I'm not taking away from any other state, but with the likes of:

Reece Anderson
Johnny Cox
Jr. Knight
Corky Owens
Gary Carpenter
Fred Shannon
Ricky Davis
Jim Losseberg
Ted Solesky
Earl Clark

and the list goes on not to mention:

GFI
MSA
Rains
Carter

are home based here. Yes we are a proud people and even proud of our steel guitars, and I feel so blessed to be a born and bred Texan/Steel Guitar Player. The disadvantage is that all the other great steelers from around the country don't live here. Can't have everything.

David - Your so right, I spent about 2 years stationed at Parris Island S.C. (loved it Beaufort, Hilton Head, Myrtle Beach) and I have always said if I couldn't live in Texas, S.C. would be my next 1st choice. It's right up there with Texas haha. And yes I believe we are going to break apart from the rest of the nation and form our own. LOL

Dennis - Loved California too, but I only got to see the southern part, but man what a place. And ooolala the women, mmmm mmmmm mmmm. Cost of living way to high for me.

James - and other Texas steelers, the list is too long but you mentioned again some more great steelers from the great state of Texas. The ones I listed are just in the north Texas area.

Well now, that's a matter of opinion. Being from Ft. Worth I can say this:

Fort Worth: Where The West Begins
Dallas: Where The East Peter's Out

Just kidding (sort of...) I have many life long friends who are Dallasites.

In E Texas, it IS bait!! Best fishing lakes in the country...... well, there is MN, but they outnumber us in the number of lakes, but we don't count our stock tanks, ponds, etc as lakes. Smile

How about adding Star Guitar to the list of Texas made instruments?
