This is a very rough mix (not edited yet, cleaned up, mastered, etc...) of a tune called Enchantment, which was written in 1959 for small orchestra for an 'exotica' record called "Voodoo!"

Exotica is generally a unique blend of Polynesian drums, keyboard percussion instruments, bird-calls, and woodwinds. The music got its name from Martin Denny’s 1957 debut album entitled Exotica. Les Baxter’s album, Ritual of the Savage is also considered one of the original records to feature sounds of exotic, magical places that only existed in the minds of the listener. Kind of an American's fantasized idea of what polynesia was.

Last fall at The Hukilau tikiphile gathering in Fort Lauderdale, Mr. Drasnin was there to conduct his music from Voodoo with full orchestra. Anyway, we worked up an abbreviated version of the tune and played it for him. We were there to play several times during the Hukilau weekend. He not only said he was honored we'd do that, but that he really enjoyed our treatment of it. He especially liked the steel on it.

Anyway, HERE is our rough-mix version of it. It will eventually have a rhythm uke on it, too.

Grab yourself a Mai Tai or other such rum drink and enjoy!

Cool......... Not many realize that melodically and harmonically, early 60s instrumental surf music is a direct descendant of 1950s Exotica.

Hey, thanks for the nice comments, guys.

I wasn't sure whether to post this or not, but the engineer and owner of the studio was really hep to get something up on the Tiki Central boards for folks, and threw a ruffmix together and put it up, so I figured... aah, why not?

Interesting about that, since this is going on our next CD, which is all instrumental SURF! Of the 12 tunes, this will be the least 'surfy' tune on it. The rest are pretty standard surf guitar format (guitar/bass/drums) styles with several originals and covers like Apache, Pipeline, Secret Agent Man, etc. A few of them will have a steel overlay ala a Blue Hawaiians kind of thing. We're doing some arrangements of Malaguena and Flight Of The Bumblebee that are quite fun, too.

One of my original tunes is a steel driven track in B minor I affectionately call Kilawaimea, which is a Faux-waiian word, of course. I really wanted it to sound like big, crashing surf, and the song title Waimea was already taken, so...

Hopefully I can post that when we get it mixed sometime next week.

Oh, and Jeff, I agree. It reminded me of Poinciana, too, which I'd like to add to our Hawaiian set one of these days.

Hey Rick -- thanks! That's a good thing, right? I've been accused of playing "that sleepy music" before!

Hey Bruce -- glad you joined! You'll love this place. I learn something valuable EVERY time I log on. I want to say once again how fun it was playing up at Trader Vic's with The Cocktail Preachers in April. Oh, and thanks for coming to our party in Da Haole Kats!!! room, afterward, too! I think I even remember some of it!

Mahalo again,

Yeah Todd thats a compliment! Of course you'd have to know how hectic it's been lately to comprehend just how "smooth" it was.

Very good sound.

Hey - thanks again, guys. I believe we'll be adding rhythm ukulele and maybe some hand percussion to that track, too. Not sure yet. It sounds real sweet with it, though.

Bill - yeah, those bass notes at the end of a tune is something I learned from Dick Sanft.

Love those extra strings!
