Yep, it's killin' time time.
...or, another opportunity to say I love Mermen, and Ethel's OK too.
This adventurous trio plays surf music for the future, and always gives the best bang for the buck to be found anywhere.

Well I dont have a favorite current band. So I would have to say it is still the Beatles and I dont see anybody out there that has a chance of taking them down..lol

Beatles, hmm, I'll have to check them out.
Will, Mermen have been around for a long time and are deffinitely a live band, but if you like the shows that come up on the sites I mentioned, then venture towards any of the studio CDs for a different perspective. Sometimes a bit sterile and less exciting compared to the powerful experience they can give an audience. Good, just different.
Very cool, down to earth people too.
Chris, both groups you mentioned look promising.
But the D&D Show, how can you not dig a Country Western two headed monster in a Nudie suit?!
Henry, I believe Wilco is now defunct, but they had their moments.
BNL and H. Bros. also are quite worthwhile.

| I have been working in Canada recently and have heard quite a few tunes by Blue Rodeo. I don't know anything about them but they have very catchy tunes done in (mostly) the style of vintage country rock such as Pure Praire League, Marshall Tucker and the like. Very refreshing! |

I don't think they did, I just went to wilcoworld and they're touring and have another cd due out in May.

P, maybe they're one of these groups that can do a bunch of side projects and hibernate as a band until it's again time to do something.
My 'all about Wilco' neighbor sed they were toast, a month or so back.
Yeah, bOb, Radiohead is one of the few newer groups that really has the goods.
And, as much as I've tried not to, I also like The White Stripes.
Since this post is actually getting (worthwhile) responses, I'm hardly limiting it to Rock, as there are so many bands or singular artists of any genre, that it'd be silly to limit it.
But, I guess most of us grew up on R&R and still dig it.
Gotta love that! |

Radiohead new? We used to do `High And Dry` at least ten years ago. I would play the `Close Encounters..etc` theme towards the end.

If you like The Mermen, check out these other surf bands too. Los Straitjackets, Blue Hawaiians, Aqua Velvets, Blue Stingrays, Bomboras,Laika and the Cosmonauts.

I don't think in terms of "who's my favorite" - who cares anyway? But someone current that I really like is Neko Case. Raw emotional power and musical sophistication together, a fairly rare combo these days.
BTW - the Derailers are certainly high on my list. I also like the Mermen and Los Straitjackets a lot. I played instrumental music like this for quite a while. Opened for Los Straitjackets quite a few times, unfortunately have yet to even see the Mermen - do they ever venture to the right coast? I love the mix of psychedelic and surf instrumental feels. |

No, Dave, they don't venture much outside of the Santa Cruz area, except for the (once) regular surf safari's to the islands.
But the youtube vids are a good example of what your missing.
Always lay'd back, but intense affairs.
Thanx for reminding me about Neko.
Your response was exactly why I cared to ask.
I'd liked to have heard the instrumental stuff you mentioned. |
