I had an issue which started perhaps a week or two back, the XP Scanner/Camera Wizard did not recognize anything from ANY USB port, but all the ports were functional with other items. And the accy's worked fine on other PC's.
The Canon Camera does not require a DRIVER and the Scanner is old and has been in use for two years on the same PC. The Wizard kept stating the drivers were missing.
Well obvioulsy something happened somewhere along the way.
What I did was to do a system restore under TOOLS back to Jan 15th. Whatever occured during Jan 15th and a few weeks ago is now long gone and the XP system runs fine.
I did suspect a program which I downloaded, but to prove the case I went and downloaded it again. No problem , all is still well.
I now suspect it is possible an update occured without me realizing it, as I do not do ANY auto updates.
Thanks to Wiz and David Mullis for the conversation and the thought process. That system restore feature is pretty cool...I didn't even know it was there.

That System Restore has saved my butt many times. And made me look like "supertech" when fixing a customer's PC.
Note on System Restore, it will not affect data (won't lose data on a restore) but if any programs were installed (between the current date and the restore date) they will have to be reloaded or if programs were uninstalled they will have to be uninstalled again. |

Yup. I used the one on Win98 more than once.
Saturday I tried to set up a "network: using generic drivers for a USB/USB network cable to no avail, and ended up trying a parallel chord that would hae taken a month to transfer a hundred megs.
Long to short, I changed all the "permissions" to the point where I'd forgotten what all I'd done, and the "Disc Management" tools wouldn't work, and I had about 5 too many "client" things on my connection list.
I restored Friday's "system" and it all was as it was then.
Wish I had one of those for my life..

Eric, what "system restore" did you use on 98? The "System Restore" function didn't come out until Windows ME.
You must be referring to something else. |

Au contraire. It's in the "DOS" prompt after "restarting in DOS". ( We all know it's not really 'DOS') I believe it was "regrestore.exe". It allowed you a couple choices.
I can check for sure the specific command, but it worked perfectly.

regrestore is for the Registry, ONLY. The "System Restore" function that is in Win ME/XP/Vista actually can track changes on the PC and allow you to restore the PC to an earlier date (restore point). This restores programs that were corrupted or even completely uninstalled (after the restore date/time point).
Much more than just the registry restore you referred to. |
