Sinuous Hawaiian steel soundtrack or no, I am beyond done with the Lincoln SUV TV ads with Gidgetmom and her three noo-byle surfgrrrrlz and the drooling wannabehulahula boys (kind of flashing on Zevon there) looking on helplessly. The last couple of seemingly endless notes kind of grate on me under the best of circumstances. What next--Matthew Lesko flogging his free-money book late at night to Sol Hoopii accompaniment? Ron Popeil dipping a prototype Tricone in Tarn-X? Junior Brown pitching iced tea? (Oh, wait--that last one really happened...) |

and yet at least it's featuring the steel which is a good thing, it gave a steel player some work and as much as you may hate commercials guess what there's a boat load of musicians and composers who make their living doing music for ads. thank goodness there's that work because, there's not many ways to make a living with music.
Just some perspective. |

I don't have a television and have never seen the ad. But it sounds like one I would like. |

I have to agree with Al. We all need the work! Bob Spickard of the Chantay's ("Pipeline", yeah I know it's not done on steel) is a friend of mine. I can't tell you how many times that song has been covered for commercial, each time resulting in a nice royalty check for Bob and Brian Carmen. Put the kids through college. Not to memtion the session work it created for the guys in the studio. I hear tunes and stlyes used as background all the time in ads, some good some pretty bad, and think, "what on opportunity" Also, my remote has a "mute" button! No offense intended.
Best,

The old saying...."don't quit your day job", is really true in the music business. |

I know, John Basedow doing a hula in a grass skirt to Jerry Byrd... Then maybe have Ozzie Osborne light him up with a WWII flamethrowwer. |

not at all. the motto to success is be smart, be eclectic or shine at one thing, be entrepreneurial, be fastidious. be patient and most of all make good choices. the music business has many niche areas and a living can be had. |
