I have this old Dekley uni and for years I have had a problem with it whining when I come back from Eb to E. Any solutions. I have tried everything fomr new pickups to using steel wool on the roller to putting peanut butter on it. Any other ideas?

Does it sound different if you slide the string to one side? |

This has got to be a chronic problem with many steels, and it's always the same (4th) string. On my old Pro I I had the sitar sound with that string forever, and couldn't get rid of it. I wonder why it's always that string _________________ Mullen RP D10, Peavey NV112, Hilton volume. Hound Dog reso. Piles of other stuff. |

I agree, the .014 E string on all my steels gets too sibilant for me especially around fret 8 or so. Not so bad on C6 tho; I wonder why. |

It does always seem to be the fourth string! Perhaps because it's a thin string raised a whole step? (I've never raised the first a whole step).
My theory is that it's wear on the top of the pull finger, not so much a burr as a slight loss of radius at the takeoff point of the string. Just a guess.
Earnest's suggestion of moving the string sideways a little is good. Sometimes works if a string doesn't seem to be sustaining like it should, too. |

On my old Bud, I tried moving the string, polishing the surface, many things, but it always came out "Norwegian Wood." No such problem with my Mullen or Marrs. |

You need to take a piece of emory paper and polish out the changer roller where the string goes over. Get the grooves out. Make it shiny. You will notice a dramatic difference in your tone. I do this once a year. Put a drop of oil under each string afterword and every time you change strings. You won't believe the difference. |

Guys on the Dekley guitars the finger bridge piece is chrome plated ,there shouldn't be any groove at all?The buzz should be coming from another place?Stu _________________ Steeltronics Z-pickup,Desert Rose S-10 4+5,Desert Rose Keyless S-10 3+5... If the roller radius is the cause of the problem, one solution could be to disassemble the changer and swap the buzzing finger with the lowest string finger. Did this with an MSA once, and it solved the problem...no buzzes anywhere. But, I like the peanut butter idea, too.
Then again, maybe all that buzz is about how good you're playing!! (could'nt resist) _________________ Best regards,

No, mine was born thataway. And, yeah, I think you'd have to take out the changer, or at least get it loose...not all that big a deal. But then, I'm a glutton for punishment! _________________ Best regards,

I ran into that constantly with a certain brand of guitars I used to sell here my steel shop. The best solution I found is to replace the .014P with a .015P and to make sure the roller nuts are completely free and not sticking. |

If it is not the changer roller you need to look into the changer axle. It is possible that it is worn enough to allow a vibration of the finger on the axle. You may need to replace the axle. This is a long shot but still a possibility. You could remove the second string and move the 4th string to the 2nd string location and tune it to E and tune it to lower to Eb and see if you can duplicate the problem with the 4th string in the 2nd string position. If it still produces the problem then it could possibly be an overtone problem with the guitar. If it does not produce the problem then you should concentrate on the changer axle or changer finger roller or the nut roller. You describe the sound of a 4th string just before it breaks so you also need to be certain you don't have a bad batch of strings.

Your 4th String finger needs to lightly sanded. I've had this happen and that was the cause of the problem. Normally, you would take the fingers out of the guitar to do that.
I hope this helps !

Murnel,On Dekley guitars the fingers are chrome plated,They are as smooth as glass,If you sand them you will destroy them. The only other guitar that I've seen that has chrome plated fingers are Blantons.Stu _________________ Steeltronics Z-pickup,Desert Rose S-10 4+5,Desert Rose Keyless S-10 3+5... Try a light coat of laquer on finger let it dry good. This will help absorb some of the over tone. |

My Blanton 4th string is doing the same thing, both before and after I changed the strings. I haven't figured it out yet.
I'm glad I kept reading before I started doing anything I shouldn't have. I didn't realize the fingers were chrome plated. It just all looks shiney to me. |

Max,I wouldn't touch the fingers that are chrome plated. The ones that have to be buffed/sanded are the ones made from aluminum Emmons,Sho-Bud etc.they get little string grooves in them, but not the chrome ones. _________________ Steeltronics Z-pickup,Desert Rose S-10 4+5,Desert Rose Keyless S-10 3+5... Guys I have tried just about everything you all have said. (Now where's that paenut butter) And yes Stu I agree. It is chrome and is not recommended to do any sanding on it. I have even replaced the pickup as it has been doing this for years. Usually I just stick a piece of cardboard or something under it. This poor old work horse has seen his better days but still plays great exept for this problem. I am ot mechanically inclined.( Can't hard;y spell it!!!hehehehe) I have been wanting to get it up to snuff so I can put it in the truck to play my gigs and get to work taking the next step on my D-10. Thanks for all the suggestions _________________ D-10 JCH Dekley U-12 D-8 Magnatone Mullen RP Evans RE 200 profex 2 BJS bars
