There is a Zane Beck 11 string steel for sale on ebay. It is an 11 string, which seems odd. I have heard of 8 strings, 10, and 12 strings, but not an 11 stringer. Does anyone know about name brand? What it would be worth? Thanks!

David,
I am not certain of the value. But yes, Zane Beck and Don Fritsche built 11 and 13 stringers besides 10, 12 and 14 stringers. I saw a 13 stringer once at Zane's house. Tom Brumley played an 11 stringer too.
Again, I don't know its value but it was well made. All their steels are well made and play and sound good but they are heavy. I play a 14 string BMI and it weighs 81 pounds.
Hope this helps!
GOD bless!

David,
Also you can probably still get some parts for it from Don if you need them. He's in Scranton, AR. He owns the BMI company and builds them. He started with Zane when he was a teenager so he knows his craft and art of the steel guitar.
He's currently building a special steel for my youngest boy who will turn 3 this August. He is already interested in the steel guitar. He's named after Zane Beck.

I believe the black JCH of Buddy Emmons (which is not his anymore) has one neck with 11 strings.

Yep Mike:
That is the one. I wish I had the money to invest in one of the nice pedal steels that are for sale on this site. The one on ebay is still for $400.00. It says that one of the knee levers needs work, and I don't want to start off with something I have to fixe before I can even play it. There is also a Carter starter on sale at ebay. It is unusual in that it says it has 4 knee levers, where a starter usually only comes with 2. It is also selling for less than $400, but without a case. |

David,
The Carter Starter is standard with 4 knee levers, and 3 floor pedals.

Larry:
For some reaon I thought that the Carter Starter only came with 2 or 3. I checked the Carter site online and you are right. It does come standard with 4 knee levers. The GFI is standard with 2, and you can order it with more.
Thanks! |

Some of the greats played 11 stringer's. The late Danny Shields played a D-11 and I believe one of Tom Brumley's steels (Buck Owens time) was a D-11 or maybe one neck was a 11 string. So it's not really an uncommon steel.

It is a ZB Student. It has the brushed aluminium frame and plasticised top. Someone has stuck some awful tape on it.
I used to sell ZB guitars in the UK in the 70's for the UK dealer, and one of the best sounding pedal steels that I have ever played was one of these student models. It was black, although I don't believe that should have made a difference. It was just an incredible sounding guitar and stood out among quite a few of the same model guitar in the shop.
Zane Beck recorded a whole album on one of these guitars, and believe me the tone was superb. |

David,
Zane Beck recorded an album years ago, I believe around 1972 titled "Zane Beck Plays the New Student Model ZB." It's out of print now but man he played some great stuff in his style of pickin' on that album. I still listen to it and love it.
GOD bless!

I've got a 1978 BMI D-11 that I bought used in 1980. Aside from the heavy weight, it is a great guitar. I hadn't played it out for a while, but did gig with it a few months ago. Other than minor retuning of the open strings, I didn't have to change one stop on it. Zane played his special tuning on 11 strings for many years before he decided to add a 12th string on the bottom and, later, a vertical knee lever. It's amazing what he was able to do with just 4 FP and 5 KL. Russ Rickman at one time had both a BMI S-13 and a S-14. It seems that at that time not too many builders wanted to make all the 'special' stuff. Byron Towle has a ZB Student Model (only 10-string) that was rebuilt by Tom Bradshaw several years ago. That guitar has a truly awesome sound to it. An 11-string student model would be a collector's piece for sure.
