Long title!
Jeff and anyone who knowos nabout Hawaii/Polynesian traditions, I am wondering if you know of a good source for getting tradtional melodies and especially rhythms for Hawaiian and Polynesian music. I am also trying to find chants lyrics. This is more a music question than non-pedal but, I wanted to make sure any non-pedalers in the know would see it
Thanks in advance |

One of the things I am having issues finding is old rhythms that dancers use tio accompany them with drums. I'm wokring on creating a full luau experience and rather than using pre-recorded drums, I was hoping to find a source for Polynesian rhythms.
That book looks good. Definitely added to my acquisition list.
The first site should be http://www.huapala.org/

What type of rhythms are you going to be using for your show when you say Polynesian?
Samoan, Hawaiian, Tahitian, or Maori(New Zealand) ??
If it's Hawaiian that you're doing, then you'll need just one of these along with an experienced chanter.
IPU HEKE - Double gourd drum
Be aware that the the noisy rhythms usually heard are Tahitian and not of Hawaiian origin. |

check out Augie Guptil's music. Polynesian percussian and chanting with great steel guitar work. Very different from the Iona/McIntire stuff.

The styles the dancers I work with do is all of the above. Except for maybe Samoan.
I figured Hawaiian was a start. Thanks for the reference material Andy!
I just think it looks tacky to pop on a CD when the dancers go to other styles. So I am hoping to find some sort of reference. |
