What is the difference between the Fender six string laps ? I guess that would be the Champ , Champion and Deluxe unless there are more models I'm not aware of . Were some student models , intermediate and top o the line in features/cost ?
I'm wondering which one would be the closest thing to a six string version of a Dual Pro.
thanks |

Fender had some early lap steels, first with K&F and then as Fender. The main student steels were the Champion and then the Champ. The Deluxes were single neck versions of the Dual Pro and then the Stringmaster.
The earlier version of the Deluxe 6 with trapezoid pickups is probably what you're looking for. In 1953 Fender started making Deluxe 8s and 6s with Stringmaster features.

Thanks for posting the pictures Rick and Brad , are the Deluxe Sixes easier to find than the Duals ? Or were there less manufactured than the 8 string models ?
thanks |

I see many more Deluxe 8 steels than Deluxe 6. Both are relatively rare compared to other Fender models.

Don't forget the "Forest White" lap steels that were out for a couple of years in the 1950'. I keep saying I'm gonna sell mine but never get around to it. Wasn't Forest the head sales mangaer for fender? The steel is a pro with his name on it i believe. It was a marketing idea to sell to students or something like that, but it's all fender. |

A friend of mine bought a six string Champ identical to the one on Brads website for $20 at a yard sale about ten years ago. I borrowed it from him and put some strings on it. We were doing some cowboy tunes at the time and it really fit in. He wouldn't sell it to me and it didn't have a case. I seen him about a month ago and he'd fallen on hard times and sold it for $100 to a rock n roller friend of his. |
