Topic: Nashville 400 with mods? |

| I am looking at a nashville 400 that is for sale and was wondering if it had any modifications done to it since it came new from Scotty's. This amp is around late 80's, I would assume. Any help is appriciated |

| The guy that is selling it is a fiddle player, and doesn't know. Some one told me that if came from Scottys, new, it might have been modded. I need to find out what year it is. |

| The serial number on this Nashville 400 is 09447946. I have a feeling this is an older amp. It is very clean and priced at $300.00....any advice, the amp seems to sound great. |

Well, if you think it sounds great, it really shouldn't matter if it has the mod or not.
However, if you've never heard a Peavey amp both before and after the mod, you really can't appreciate the difference it makes!  |

Your right Donny. The price seems right, and is really clean. I have a Rivera Fandango for a lead amp, but for steel it breaks up pretty quick.
I probably will get it , and check into the mod down the road. I should spend more time practicing. That's an even easier way for me to improve my tone...cheaper too  |

Dave,
I'd grab up that amp at that price and in that condition. That's a good price for a real good and loud steel amp, even if it's never been modded. You can always have Ken Fox do his mod to it in the future if you want.

According to Mike Brown,
Serial Numbers beginning with 08575482 have the tone mod installed as part of the production assembly.
Since that one is 09.... it would appear to be a later model that already has the tone mod installed in production.
However, the older (original model) amps with the 1502 speaker doesn't really need the Peavey tone mod. The amplifier is "voiced" for that speaker. The later ones with the 1501 speaker and manufactured before the mod was made part of production will benefit from the tone mod and it will make a big difference. |

Jack makes a good point about the speaker. However the Lemay and Peavey mod do nothing to open up the amp and get rid of the mid honk!
I would not play a Nashville 400 with or without the mod for that reason for years. A great amp, just too many electrolytic caps used to pass the audio. That masked the great tone this amp can produce.
I have been amazed that I now rarely even use the mid cut knob at all after I modded my first amp. No extreme boost or cuts on treble, bass or presence needed either. The less you have to EQ an amp the better! I have no problem getting a great tone from the amp now. Even use one with my Tele. I would have never done that before.
To give you an idea of what it is like here is a review from Gerald Mincke:
":I just had Ken mod a second NV 400 for me, it was delivered to me yesterday, I used it on a gig last night. Incredible sound with the push pull, blends in with our guy on B-3, acoustic through an amp, none of that where did my sound go, thing.
One big surprise, I think my days of bringing a separate amp to gigs for telecaster might be over. With the "bright" boost engaged, this thing sounds like a very clean Twin Reverb! I tried it last night before the gig, couldn't believe it. Ken turned this one around immediately, and as always maintained great communication with me. Shipped the amp to me packed like it was going on a lunar mission. I really recommend this mod, and this comes from a former dyed-in-the-wool boutique tube amp head."

Thanks for all the info guys. It sounds like I found a great deal. I think I'm definatly going to get it. I played it for a while last night, and it sounded great. Thanks again everyone for all your help!
