Moving a crank on my MSA the other day, I noticed it wouldn't tighten down. Stripped, I was sure.
Taking it off, a little spring fell out from the bottom of the hole where the set screw taps in. Has anyone ever seen such a thing?

Remembering working on old pianos, often we'd use a piece of copper bass string winding to stick in a wallowed out hole in the case to tighten up. Something similar could be done here; I'll give it a try.

I have never seen a thread insert in a bellcrank before. You more likey have stripped the threads off in one piece. However, thread inserts of about any size can be bought at many good hardware or bolt stores. Just match up the bolt size you need. Or, I suppose you could also redrill and tap the bellcrank to a larger size bolt.

Someone must have repaired it along the way, if it was indeed a Heli-Coil insert. (Are you sure it wasn't just the threads that were stripped out, and not an insert?) Anyway, you could drill and tap it out and install a larger #8 screw, but that might weaken the crank. I'd just use a longer screw and put a nut on the back side. That way, you'd still be using the same size hex wrench.

Because the shafts are round, quite a bit of force is required to keep the bell-cranks tight, so other methods (like using epoxy) might not work. If you need a longer screw and nut, just send me a S.A.S.E..

A fo'bro sent me an email offering a couple of MSA cranks. I've lost the email; are you still lurking out there?
Anyone have a spare crank?

I do. And it came from that guitar in the first place (from when it was a D-12)

I'll send it to you.
