I play at Christian Life Church in Austin, Tx. regularly. We do two services on Sunday morning, two Sunday night services a month, and every Wednesday night. We play mostly Contemporary Praise and Worship music but the steel is a big part of the band. I use various effects as needed to fit the style of the song. It doesn't pay much, but we have a blast.

In case you're interested, you can go to this site and download some of our music that was recorded live. There is no overdubs or editing done, these were recorded directly off the front of house board. You will hear a few clinkers here and there. We have a really good sound engineer, even though he is my son. He also runs our studio.

I play as much now as I ever have and our band stays constantly booked every weekend anywhere from 2-4 nights a week around the Dallas area.

My only complaint is that I feel like I am always running from my day job to my night job and missing sleep now and then.

Herbie feel free to come up to Ward on Friday nights. I am there playing for a family dance from 7pm to 10pm. Once in a while I even get Rudy Osborne to come sit in with us. He's a great player and an even better friend. When you come up be sure and bring your steel and I'll let you sit in and I'll pick on the bass guitar. You have a standing invitation.

Henry I am planning on making it down your way some day soon. Would love to visit your theater again. I'll call you and let you know when I am going to be able to come down.

Herbie - I've been with the Andrew Jones Band for close to a year now, and we have been playing fairly regular in the Fort Worth/Dallas Metroplex area. We are starting to get a following and are spreading out into other areas of Texas. This kid is not only a great singer, but he's a great guy to work with. Writes and sings a lot of his own songs along with some of the great traditional stuff. Plus he puts up with my playing as well. Check us out at www.andrewjonesband.com Thanks.

Darvin , I listened to your music and it sounds a lot like my church group. The big difference is you are blessed enough to have your son as the soundman. You are in the mix and I am never sure that I am. I enjoyed your playing.

Henry that sounds like a plan. I'll do my best to get down there soon. Would love to come a visit again. It's been way too long. Sorry for not getting back sooner. Been busy up here in Conway. Working my fingers to the bone. Sorry to say it's not because I'm playing so much though.

I do about 120 dates a year, all one-nighters and all over Texas. But invariably, I'm sitting down... and I'm generally steady.

Years ago, all the gigs in CA I did were "sit-down" jobs, which to me meant an extended stay at one club at least 2-3 nights a week, sometimes more. A gig where you left your equipment set up onstage overnight.

When I moved to TX in 72, I was surprised when I found most all the gigs in the Austin area I was playing were one-nighters, more shows and dances than cocktail lounge stuff. The sit-down gigs in Austin weren't country, but rather were pop/piano-type bands.

But in Houston and Dallas in the 70's, there were nightclubs that had steady bands, like Johnny Lee at Gilleys, Frenchie Burke at the Winchester, etc. Probably other towns in TX as well.

I know there's Cowboys in the Dallas area that has a house band, but I think that era is predominantly in the history books and gone with the legendary wind.

I used to think the measure of success was having a "sit-down" gig, and I've done plenty. Mostly in the D/FW area, 2,3,4,5,6, and 7 nights a week. I've done gigs so long, when I took my amp off the stage, there would be an outline of my amp from dust and smoke.
I'm like Herb. I do about 120+ dates a year, all individual shows. It makes it so much more enjoyable. I can't get excited about showing up 5 min before downbeat, and flip your amp on to play the same songs to the same people.
We do several Casino gigs every year, but they only run 3-4 nights. In fact, I'm in Colorado as I type on such a gig. I lay in my room (very nice room) until 5 min prior, take the elevator down and it's showtime. Sounds easy, but it's not.
