I was working on a version of this a while back, then I got distracted by a few other tunes. I'll probably end up posting it in about a months time, if you can wait (or maybe someone'll beat me to it Cool )

Yeah, I don't think it comes in 'easy'. I think it just comes in 'hard' and 'harder'.

Doug Jernigan has it on his web site, but I agree that there is no "Easy" way to learn or play this song. I'm not even sure I could move my fingers as fast as Doug can play!!

Cool

Orange Blossom is really a very simple E9th melody, espercially the Johnny Cash version. It is all around 3 chords. I am working on a simple pedal steel melody version and will post it when I get it completed. It would be good to to have a peep at the hard and very hard versions.

tb, Yes, the Johnny Cash vocal version is a simple melody.

The OBS that we are referring to the Instrumental version... a bluegrass Fiddle standard, very fast, and a difficult melody to play. To hear a MIDI file of the tune click on the link below, scroll down the page and click on the link for Orange Blossom Special. Listen to the part that starts at 28 seconds into the tune. There are a couple of positions to play this melody on E9, neither of which is "easy" by any stretch of the imagination.

Thank you Doug for that link. It gives one a good idea of the melody. Back in 1986 I spent time with Jeff Newman going over his "Just Play ther Melody" course. One of my best investments. He told me to learn all of his scales and then listen to tunes a lot. After a while, while playing scales and phrases, all of a sudden songs just pop up. Last night I tried my version of OBS with the band. They liked it a lot. My version is not very fast. No, I don't want to play it like Doug Jernighan, although I like to listen to his version. Mine is quite simple and effective and not too fast. Jeff Newman emphasized simplicity with a great technique. I think sometimes us players try to take something simple and fast and make it complicated and very fast. I still have some additions to add to my version. When it all pans out I might share it.

TB, this is pretty sad,I recently played in a band and the bass player did a solo in OBS I couldn't top. I've been playing full time 23 years and I still cringe anytime a band wants to do that tune cuz it will test your blocking technique to the max.

This isn't an whole arrangement or anything close. Just a couple of phrases that you might use to create your own licks for the song. Probably stuff you already know but I figure it's worth posting for the beginners.

Brian,
my band recently decided to start doing OBS (Johnny Cashversion thank God: mercifully slower than the fiddle versions!), so I've been toying around with it. Here are three possibilities for the basic "riff," each with pluses and minuses. These are in A but have no open strings so are relatively transposable to any key:

For each of these you will have to experiment with which right hand picking pattern works best for you.

The first works most like a banjo roll. I can get it going to a good tempo, but it's nearly impossible (for poor ol' pitiful me) to block that third string with any tempo going. The second is a cleaner "fiddle" run up and down and easier blocking, but I find it very hard to gain velocity moving across so many strings. The last is a straight out cheat(!), only going up to the fifth note of the scale instead of the root, but it can be played very fast and blocked very cleanly, and at a really fast tempo, only the fiddle players in the audience are going to notice.

Hope these help.

Dan

Here's my 2 cents, a rough draft with a pseudo ending I never finished when I was working on my echo doubling tab. I can tab out some parts of this if it helps.

Orange Blossom Special
