Topic: Emmons PP b string tuning problem |

| The no pedals position tuning on my 5th string constantly changes. Everytime I check it I either have to sharpen or flatten it even though the pedals down tuning stays the same. Any ideas on a fix? |

| Hmmm, lots of possibilities here, How old are the strings? Next loosen the 5th string, move it out of the way of the roller nut and make sure it rolls freely. Do you by channce have a vertical knee lowering that string? |

| Check the open string tuning screw on the end plate- sounds like it's loose and needs some Locktite thread-locking glue. Also make absolutely sure that there is "slop" or freeplay in the A pedal and C pedal before anything engages when activating the pedal. If there is no slop you will fight the tuning until you are blue in the face~~ or bring it down to the shop- glad to help anytime~~~~ |

| No disrespect to Jim.But I hate slop.Rods rattling and knocking.I think he means you need a little slack.The more slack or slop.The more noise you have.So be sure there is a little slack when the A snd C pedals are released.........bb |

Check that the spring that holds the changer finger (lowering section) against the body is tight enough

10-4 to what Bobby said- my slop=his slack  - obviously you don't want a bunch of rattling around - just be sure that you can see a titch of daylight between the bellcrank and the collar before activating the pull |

Okay, happens on new strings and old. The tuning screw is not too loose, no looser than any of the others not having the problem and yes I do have a lower on that string.
There appears to be just enough free play before engagement. The spring idea of Richard's may be just the solution. I'll check the tension on it tonight when I get home.

| One other thought- since you have a lower on that string as well- engage the lower fully and then check the "slack" to ensure that it is still there~~~ |

Jim, would that make it de-tune all the time even if I never use the lower, which I don't?
Btw, sometimes I have to flatten the open string to get in tune, sometimes I have to sharpen it. |

Tightened the spring like Richard suggested and this seems to have cured my problem. Will know for sure next weekend after a night of playing in a club. Thanks to all for your input.
