In an attempt to preserve and promote a style of Hawaiian Steel Guitar playin' ... that I feel may be fadin' away ...

I.E. ... Jerry Byrd Slant Bar Style ...

I have added a new page to my website ...

It will contain the tab and mp3 ... of a short passage ... from one of JB's Pro-Arrangements ... that I feel demonstrates this style of playin'.

Since its just me, don't expect too much ... but I'm gonna give it a-go ...

Give me somethin' to do while feedin' Tucker durin' the day and some incentive to head down to my "Lair" and play some in the evenin's ...

Here's a direct link: Slants of the Week

Or just click the link under Quasi ...

I hope to "catch" a decent sample and tab it ... once a week

Thanks Ric, great way to study and learn. One thing I'm finding myself doing more and more is playing the melody line without any harmony under it first. I then try and see how the line is harmonized under it and what it might possible mean as far as what all the intervals relate to as a foundational chord/scale etc relative to that melody note. I believe Joe Pass did something kinda similar.

...great sound, Rick __ very, very clean.

Are you using a 3/4" dia. bar to make those "split-string" slants? I know Jerry did.

I play a few tunes with "split-string" triads; but I'm using a short 7/8" dia. bar (Fender string spacing). It sounds OK to me; but some players say 3/4" is more accurate.

Thanks y'all ... just tryin' to be useful.

I just added the rhythm snippet (w/o steel) that goes with the passage ... and will do that for the ones that follow.

I hope to assemble a "library" of these segments ...

After awhile ... you start to see patterns to his "ways" ... that can be applied to your own stuff.

I view these 200+ Pro Arrangements* as a legacy he left us ... along with his recordings.

Studing them ... doesn't mean you want to be a "JB Clone" ... ... its just makes sense to take advantage of all the stuff he did.

Well, thats my opinion anyway.

* Jerry Byrd's course and these Pro-Arrangements can be bought via Scottys Music.

Yes Clean ... I've gone back to the trusty 2 3/4" x 3/4" bullet bar (a Red Rajah here).

I'm even undergoin' some medical treatments ... to get my "Byrd Finger" back in workin' order (well at least able to hit a string) ...

Thanks Rick,
The Slants of the Week is excellent and I want to encourage you to keep it going. I especially like that you have included an audio transcription and a rhythm play-along track.

Although we've never met, please know that I appreciate all that you have done and continue to do for the steel guitar community. Your generosity is inspiring.

As far as these "mini lessons" on slant bar ... remember, its much more important to keep the melody ... flowing/uninteruppted ...

So don't get bogged down ... tryin' to hit all the harmony notes ... add them in as you get more comfortable.

Bruce Clark (Cumquat Records) sent me a "talk tape" once ... where he described what he called the ... 3 types of "Musicians"

quote:

1) The musician who has the technical skills to execute any passage ... but lacks creative ability.

2) The musician who has the creative abilities ... but lacks the technical skills to implement his/her ideas.

3) The rare musician ... who has both the creative ability & technical skills ...

I wrote back ... and said:

You left one out ...

4) None of the above ... me

I would be interested in the use of C# instead of the C tuning. I've been wanting to try it out but would love to see some good tab. Thanks Rick.

If you mean the C# on the "6th" string ... next weeks "passage" will have an excellent example ... how JB used this C# to create one of his many "signature" sounds.

If you are referring to C#m7 tuning ... I ain't gonna be much help there ...

I only play in C6/A7 or E9 ...

CC, nope, but I've been to Rosa's Cantina. Rick, my little sweetheart has this crazy notion about me bringing money into the household. I don't understand it but I guess I'll put up with it for 3 or 4 more years. The "fringe benefits" are outstanding!

I wanna be Rick Aiello when I grow up. I'm pretty sure I'm older than you though. You are just an inspiring example of taking something you are passionate about and making your dreams happen.

Let's see . . .
musician
theoretician
dustpans and pickups
steel guitar summit
your own website
HSGA board member
perpetuator of the Byrd legacy

Of course, family man. I'm sure there's lots I'm leaving out. Thanks for the slant lessons. I for one will be checking in every week. They are a great suppliment to his other teaching material.
