Hi everyone,
I posted a few weeks ago about buying a guitar, and lots of you guys gave me very good advice. I ended up buying a BSG S-10 from forum member Ryan Gimpert and the guitar just arrived today.
I've had very few opportunities to get up close to a PSG before, so I don't really know much about these things, but this appears to be very solidly and well constructed. The pedals and knee levers are smooth and effortless and the whole thing seems wonderfully engineered.
The thing that amazed me most was that this guitar was perfectly in tune straight out of the box. It travelled from Michigan in winter to the middle of a hot Australian summer, and I had to adjust nothing!
Now I've just got to learn to play the thing...
btw, thanks to all of you who recommended the Winnie Winston book. It arrived yesterday and I read it last night-it is excellent.
I also grabbed the 'Pushin' Pedals' and Pedal Steel Workshop mags from the forum and they were very interesting. I can highly recommend them to a novice to get some perpective.
I also have some instructional material from Jim Loessberg and Buddy Emmons that I grabbed from the forum, but I've yet to look into them. I think I'm going to need all the help I can get.
Cheers,
Matt |

Bsg guitars are very well built guitars right here in my home state of Ohio by Don Burrows, this man does really great work. |

Congratulations, Matt. Something that really helped me was the article b0b posted on E9th Theory. The list of chord types and locations is very helpful, especially when building harmonized scales. Have fun!

I second what Kyle said - when I started playing a couple of years ago that article from Bob was the thing that got me started making some half decent noises.
If you've got any questions re playing or whatever feel free to give me a call anytime(I'm in NSW).

Yeah Jimmie - good to hear from you.
The BMI is still going strong - I have covered a lot of miles with it since I bought it from you. I have ordered another BMI from the factory....still waiting for that one.
All the best,

Thanks everyone,
I've got rather a steep learning curve, as you could imagine. Luckily with the help on this forum I think I've found some good resources to get me on my way (Winnie Winston book etc).
The BSG is great and the pedal/lever action is very smooth. It seems solid as a rock and sounds very good through either of my amps (a pair of Boogies-not very steel!). I have no idea how to make adjustments (change pulls etc) but I'm sure it will be easy when the time comes.
I've started off by making some tables showing the three most common inversions (from what I can gather) of major, minor and dominant chords and the effect of each lever and pedal. I'm looking for patterns to help my brain come to terms with the huge amount of seeminly-random information.
Damien, I'll probably take you up on your offer of help once I've got my head around things a bit more.
Cheers,
Matt |
