He did answer, and said "That is an option for the buyers convenience only in case someone wants to use a credit card. Otherwise, Paypal is not going to be accepted on this item. Cant change it now."

I tried to warn him because I recently received an email from eBay stating that they are going to start disciplining sellers that have payments surcharges and over priced shipping charges.
Ebay doesn't make a percentage off of those charges, so I guess they didn't like that people were doing it. They also said that it was against some state laws to apply those charges.

I tried to let him know before the eBay policy police caught him.

At least he has it back up and this time doesn't list it as "Like New"(I think that got him in trouble) and this time he won't take pay-pal.

Well, since we all seem to be intrigued by, and are watching this auction, let's kick around some thoughts on this guitar itself. Seems to be a square front Pro I, vintage between 70 and 74. What of that screw down fret board, is that orig, is it what you call a dust catcher? Appears to have 26 frets. The mechanism looks untouched, no rube-ing around under there. Should we start a pool as to the closest final $$, bidders excluded of course. I willingly went a grand the first time and would not be shocked to see it exceed $2000. I'd enjoy your thoughts on this one..............Joe

Squarefronts started in 1975, and the Superpro mechanism started '77. So it's a '75 or '76.

What a beautiful piece of wood! It is a square front, diamond inlay. Shobud introduced the square fronts in 1975, and they ran into the '80's. That is a dust catcher fretboard, and is glued on, NOT screwed down. The dust catcher appears to be original. Also it is an all-pull mechanism. Unfortunately, there is not a picture of the changer. Chris is right on.

This guitar would make a beautiful Coop conversion, and easily make a 3X5. These guitars are great tone machines.

Don't mean to hijack the subject, but what's up with the 100K Fessenden? When I sell my guitar, I want this guy as my agent ... And what happened there, b0b??

(Barry, see: http://bb.steelguitarforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=102749 for the story on the Fessy.)

Yes, James, what a nice blank slate for a Coop job!

Even in mint condition, I don't think this guitar will fetch any more than $1,500. With the limited copedent, it's basically useless to any serious studio or gigging player. It's a perfect candidate for a Coop conversion, like James said. Anyone buying this guitar to actually use it professionally will have about $600-$700 or more in upgrades if they want it done right. Or they could just enjoy the 3+1 for what it is and make some great music.

Sho~Bud 6139 3+1 for $2,000? Not gonna happen, in my opinion.

James writes, dust catcher, glued not screwed. I'm just learning about this fret board, but can plainly see phillips screw heads. What would be the purpose of these, hardly decorative. I feel very fortunate to have an older round front,w/ the toggle and black knobs, and will not go bigger than $1200 on this one. Mine was given 2 additional teardrop knees for which I am greatful. Thanks to those who are helping me learn about these old Maple Buds, I've developed a real taste for them. I believe for strict collectibility, the holy grail of this line would be the original Permanent, w/ wooden ends.............Joe

Joe, I thought my eyes were playing tricks on me, so I went back to the auction to check. I dont' see any philips screws in the fret board. I DO see 7 philips screws ahead of the fret board--3 are holding the pickup, and 4 are holding the changer cover to the body. Are these what you see? I'm looking at auction/item #260084387325. What I refer to as the fret board is ONLY the black plastic with the card insignias and fret lines. I see no screws. The neck itself on this model is held on with 3 screws that are underneath the body. Hope this helps, Joe.

By the way, Joe, that round front you have with the knobs on top is no good and a piece of junk. You should just sell it to ME, I will give it a VERY nice home, right next to mine!! HA!! Wink

James, take a look at the 3rd picture from the top in the left column. On the fourth fret (between the heart and the spade) I see a phillips head. If it is indeed glued down, could that be from where someone removed the screw and put a filler in?

The reason I ask is that my Pro-II has the glued-down dust-catcher and there are multiple holes like this one which line up with the screws underneath that hold the neck down. However they are solid and don't have the grooves like a screw.

Boy this topic is making me want to bid. Very Happy

Well, I'd send it right out Jim, but it's being re-wired tomorrow. It needs to be properly grounded and have those cool knobs reconnected. Should have heard the roar in my newly aquired 1970 Pro Reverb, and the discharge upon putting a finger pick to the string. The screw heads I saw are centered between the 3rd /4th, and 15th/ 16th frets. After a 25 year locksmith career, of trying to hide the screw heads, this just struck me as odd.........Joe

I just got back home. Man you guys have good eyes!!! After re-examing the pics, and studing where you said, I can see those screws! Thanx for correcting me---my bad. This would look great with a new white fretboard from Coop! James

Yes, mine has two screws - at the 4th and 16th frets. I actually really like the dust catcher fretboard. It's almost like 3-D.

Post  Posted 8 Feb 2007 8:25 pm     My Sho-Bud Pro 1 with 6 pedals and 5 knee levers
Reply with quote

Chiris- I also like my Sho-Bud Pro 1. I got from the original owner who played his D10 out all the time so sold it to me. It had 3 pedals and 2 Knee levers all original and mint, not a mark on it. I was going to have Ricky Davis add the pedals , knee levers, etc. I knew he would do a great job. But I hated to chance shipping it to Texas and back.

So I got some parts from Ed Naylor, bless his soul, and some from John Coop, who made some great knee lever kits.

I am not a mechanical or electronic engineer, just a musician that loves steel guitar.

I got lucky and my Michigan Friend Fred Welch took it home and when he brought it back , I was amazed at how nice he set the pedals and knee levers underneath, quite a job.

It sounded great, played smooth and easy, and of course a beautiful blonde Birdseye maple, round front , original 2 coil tap Sho-Bud pickup .

Fred put my "Lean and Mean" E6 tuning with the first two pedals set for the E9 A and B pedals. The other 4 for E6...$2000.00 ?? You couldn't buy it for that.

It weighs 33 and 1/2 lbs out of the case all setup.
In my Career, I had 2 Sho-Bud Professionals, an earlier S10 Prof with the Rack and Barrel with 5/5. (That I sold to HowardR, which I should have kept) ,a Super-Pro D10 with 8 and 6. ,A Julian Tharpe Sho-Bud single 14 string with 9/4. That was a beautiful blue. And now the Pro 1. of my Sho-Buds.
I have seen guys having for sale a couple of real nice Sho-Bud, single 12 Universals. These are nice if you want to play E9 and B6 all on one neck.
So I have liked all the Sho-buds that I have owned and several other brands too, wish I could have kept them all....al.SmileSmile

While looking closely for the screws (saw the one in the third pic), I noticed quite a few more dings in the other pics then I saw the first few times. Maybe not as "as new" as I thought. Art And thats a lot of as's

I have attempted to show very high resolution pictures of this guitar which will show anything that may be in question. Keeping this in mind, any minute scratch will show up when enlarged. Its a lot better situation than most pictures I see that are terrible in what you can see. I have added a shot of the changer end to show the double raise, double lower changer.
I have not figured out what the thought was when the item was removed previously, but it was because the word "LIKE" new was in the title. This word is not allowed since it can compare to another brand name and may infringe on copyrights. GUESS WHAT? There are over 70,000 titles right now with LIKE NEW in it. I have a Paypal refund claim right now against a seller who sent a previously damaged radio in a box that didnt have a mark on it (box) when delivered. He has the radio back and my money. He even has it relisted, but no refund. I suppose someone had to report my use of the LIKE word so I will assume that is part of the problem. Here is the email I got from them if there is any doubt. As for as the Paypal issue, I know that I have wanted to buy an item at times when only a M.O. was accepted and I didnt have the cash. I used that option only as a convenience if someone wanted to absorb the fees. Otherwise it would not be accepted for an item this expensive. Wrong or not, thats what it was, to keep from leaving someone out that wanted this fine guitar.

You recently listed the following auction-style listing:
260083034142 - SHO BUD SHOBUD PEDAL STEEL GUITAR PRO 6139 LIKE NEW
The listing was removed because it violated the eBay Keyword Spamming policy. The violation occurred when you included the following information in your listing:

LIKE NEW
All fees related to this listing have been credited to your account. We also notified members who placed bids on the item that the listing has
been canceled.

Keyword spamming is the practice of placing inappropriate words in searchable text to draw attention to Web content. To ensure that members' searches produce relevant results, sellers are not permitted to put brand names or other inappropriate keywords in a listing title or description for the purpose of attracting members to a listing. Sellers can only include a brand name under certain limited conditions.

For example, sellers can't make a comparison to the functionality of a brand or celebrity name, or other item, in a listing title. However, sellers can make *one* comparison to functionality in the subtitle or description as long as the listing doesn't confuse members about who manufactured the item. (More than one comparison will cause the listing to be removed.)

In addition, the following words and phrases are generally *not* permitted in the title because they will produce unsatisfactory search results for buyers looking for particular items:
- Like
- Style
- Not
- Inspired by
- Similar to
- Better than
- As worn by
- The brand name followed by a question mark -- for example, "Chanel?"

Hi the guitar that Chris was on about belongs to me,it has a 2x1 changer two hole bellcranks ,big pedals a square front and fish tail headstock. The ally neck i think has been added at a later date by a previous owner, for what reason i do not know,,but it has been very well made, fitted, and looks like it could have been factory fitted like that from new, it is that well made,{ BUT IM SURE IT HAS BEEN PUT ON AT A LATER DATE }..the guitar still has the original changer end casting and pick up,this little guitar plays like silk sounds great, and the tuning is rock sollid.i hope the pics come out.

RC, I think you have a real sweet guitar there, and if you don't get it sold, relist it in a month or so. You reserve is very fair, and this will make someone a real sweet guitar. They are not making these guitars any more, and the value of these vintage bus just keeps climbing. To bad someone "nit-picked" your auction.

Well, I would like to tell you guys I agree ,but that would be a lie... I sold a MINT Pro I a few years back,in unplayed cond and was lucky to get $1200 for it. .. I now have a 6139 with 6 and 4 , that plays beautifully.. It is a Pro I squarefront without the label.. No rack and barrel,.. has the 2/1 changer.. Because its not mint and the apron is lacquer checked, it sits unsold.. at only $1050/...????..

I mean yes we all want a 40 year old steel thats never been played, but for the most part that is unrealistic. as most steels that age get some playtime..
A few years ago I was lucky to get $1200 for a nice ProIII... and I had to send it to Germany to get it... I don't know what I am doing wrong, but buds have been losers for me when I try to sell them.... bob

I guess I can't complain too much about older mechanisms... I'm still playing the Emmons p/p... for 37 years now, except for a brief time in 1977 when I played a Sho-Bud LDG.
