| Anyone have any idea what it would cost to ship a Deluxe 8 from ATL to England? |

I've shipped a few guitars out of the country. USPS is much cheaper than UPS or others. You can get an estimate on their site, USPS.com. Just figure 10-15 lbs on the weight but you need the destination city. I figure around 30x10x6 inches for a single neck. Email me if you have any questions.

A similarly sized lap steel + case that I imported from the States recently cost $66.00 via USPO air. The overall package size was 36" x 16" x 8 1/2".
According to the seller UPS wanted $240!

| I've never had to pay more than $75.00 for a lap steel to the UK, Sometimes Fedex sometimes others, BUT be aware that the UK customs charges 17.5% VAT and INCLUDES the S&H price in their calculation !! (Double taxation at its worst) |

| Thanks for the help gang. Yeah Baz I had a pedal go to a fellow in the UK a couple of years ago and by the time they got done taxing it I was shocked at the overall cost. I guess the dollar is pretty weak these days or you all wouldn't be buying from us. |

Isn't it against the law to ship vintage American instruments out of the country? Just kidding, sort of.
I was twice guilty of that crime myself. A '58 Strat and a 1860's Martin w/coffin case.
I felt sad, but needed the money and no one in the states would give me their worth at the time.  |

I recently tried to send a lap steel to the UK and $240 is almost exactly what UPS wanted. Ended up using the USPS.
I sent a tricone to the UK about 5 years ago and it was about $200.

| Basil mentioned the dreaded VAT import duty at 17.5% here in the UK. A friend has just imported an old Kay bass and he says that the VAT is exempt if the item is over 50 years old.I have not confirmed that but I would advise highlighting the date of the Fender in the description on the package |

Not so sure about the 50 year exemption, BUT, I am sure that VAT @ 17.5% WILL be charged on the CARRIAGE, for sure.. of course the 'Declared Value' as an old guitar could be anything !!

it should cost somewhere between 250 $ / 300 $
go to shippers websites & check out the rates Keith
shippers & receivers Zips, weight, & insurance will give you the rate
Bax Global is the cheapest
one must have an account w: them in order to ship
i often use Fedex cause it's cheaper than UPS
they also deal better than the brownies (ups) when claims need to be filed.
Customs duties are the sole responsability of the buyer NOT the the shipper.
Those fees & VAT will have to be paid
they are determined by the "declared value" of the goods
ensure that the insurance value coincides w: the "declared value"

Also don't forget that if the declared value seems to be much lower than a realistic one (and at least here in Austria the customs officers are very Ebay-savvy, and also have long lists of every kind of item with estimated current values), you will have to provide some proof (like a receipt or a record of the money transaction - PayPal receipt, etc...)

An arm and a leg ! I moved from England to California 26 years ago, and over the years I've mailed all sorts of stuff back and forth. At Christmas I would find that the gifts cost less than the postage...
But, seriously, just weigh the instrument and container and go onto the USPS website. You can just input the weight, delivery location, and service you want and the cost comes right up. I've found USPS cheaper than UPS or DHL, but try all their websites. |

One more thing to add.
I've taken several guitars over there. I just check them in as luggage. No-one queries a musician taking a guitar with him. Then I "forget" to bring it back.
If you're going to spend a fortune on freight you might as well travel with the instrument and take a vacation. |
