I just received an advance copy of Joe Goldmark's "Seducing the '60s," and I really enjoy it. It's similar to the recent recordings by Tommy Dodd and Jim Cohen and features tunes that I vividly remember. Joe's selections are, as always, all over the road (ha), but I love his choice of tunes. He has some guest artists like Jim Campilongo and John McFee, plus a killer horn section. Although there are many steel guitar instrumentals and plenty of E9th picking, the recordings sound like a great band, featuring a fine steel guitarist. Well done, Joe, and thanks for the music.

I just got a copy, and yeah, it's very cool. The coolest version of "Sad Eyed Lady of the Lowlands" I've heard since the original.
Great tunes from the '60's.
Joe, you done good.....

I received my copy on Saturday and gave it a good listen. Mi amigo Joe has done it again: excellent playing and choice of material, with arrangements on songs one wouldn't normally think of as "steel" candidates but in his creative hands work wonderfully.

Joe Goldmark is one of steel guitar's visionaries, IMHO.

Couldn't agree more Herb. Joe's record is very entertaining! Except it's a little disheartening to know that I remember when all of those songs were originally out Sad

Classic tunes, interesting treatments, judicious use of cool effects, and great steel playing!

Just when you think Joe's CDs are so good they can't possibly get any better, they do. If you haven't heard Joe's CDs yet, you have a real treat coming. My persona; favorite is "All Over The Road" but every one of them gets a 10+.

This time around we get to hear Joe backing up a couple of vocalists on some tunes. As usual he does a better-than-excellent job.

Thumbs up for yet another terrific CD by one of our finest and most original players.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for all the kind words, I really appreciate it. I tried to make a good steel album, but also make an album that would be enjoyed by the "No Depression" roots music crowd.

I try to find interesting tunes that will make good instrumentals, and I usually stray outside the country fare, as there are so many guys who can play those kinds of tunes better than me. On this album, I also searched for vocal rock tunes from the 60's that I thought would benefit from a country-soul interpretation.

Anyway, I'm glad you like it!

I drove around town this past Sun.Once again in a snowstorm listening to Joe's new Cd,I am just blown away...Yeah Skip "Sad Eyed Lady"just plain hurt me!The way that Joe melts with the Memphis style horns...That's the S---! and what a tone, and articulation.I met Joe in about 1977 I was playing at the Boarding House in San Fran with the late B.W.Stevenson,and after our show Joe came up to me and introduced himself.and gave me a copy of his first album,The one with the "Spinners"song on it,I took that back to Austin with me and wore it out,I am proud to call him my friend after 30 years ,what an incredible talent.

I'm really enjoying it as well... I particularly enjoy the live recordings... don't get me wrong the studio cuts are great, but I love to get to hear what a picker does "live" when there's room to go off the cuff.
Hoping I'll hear some of this on XM12 soon...

Speaking of "live", I REALLY enjoyed his playing when The Twangbangers came around to my neck of the woods a few years ago. Mr. Goldmark fit right in alongside Redd Volkaert and Bill Kirchen. I was treated to an evening of wonderful music spiced up by three FINE soloists.

I'm really loving this album. There are two consistant features to Joe's albums. One is that for Joe, it's all about the song. He picks great songs, does great arrangements that are creative but are true to the original, and plays tasty parts that fit well with the song, but are true to the pedal steel tradition of Lloyd Green, Emmons, etc. The other thing is that Joe always gets killer players for his releases. This record could be the best yet (John McFee's guitar playing totally rocks on this album).

Great work, Joe!

Ditto what Dan and others said. It's definitely a steel guitar album-but Joe doesn't constantly have it "in your face" on all the songs.

I picked it up last night as I was heading north through San Francisco, and decided to make the jaunt over to Haight Street to Amoeba Music, one of my favorite places to spend money, and also the business in which Joe is a partner.

The young woman who was the cashier seemed pleased that I was buying Joe's latest release, and I told her that I needed to help support her boss!

Joe-I should have asked if you were at work last night, I have never met you in person, though I have seen you play in the past.

Anyway, I was able to listen to it almost twice between SF and by the time I got home to northern Sonoma County.

I love it!

My favorite tune so far might be the Steely Dan song, "Dirty Work." Bart Davenport's vocal is superb and I was singing right along with him heading up Hwy. 101.

And the relatively obscure Beach Boys song, "Darlin'"-just outstanding. I'm taking my son Sunday evening to the Paramount Theater in Oakland to see Brian Wilson and his band give the final performance ever of the album Pet Sounds in its entirety.I'm a huge Beach Boys/Wilson fan!

And who else but Joe would think of "The Kids Are Alright" by The Who as a pedal steel instrumental?

And I loved the back page of the liner booklet: A young long-haired Goldmark playing his steel on a faux baseball card, and on the bottom it reads SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS-1969 ROOKIE CARD, with the Giants logo off to the left.

The Giants-my favorite team for over 40 years!

Mark, Enjoy the Brian Wilson show, I my two oldest kids (9&11) to the Beacon Theatre in NYC in Nov. to see the show and it was awesome, Al Jardine was there as I think he will be at the show you are going to. And they did play Darlin' also along with alot of other somewhat obscure BB stuff, Enjoy!!.

I have two of Joe's CD's and love them, I will now order his new CD, also love the Twangbangers CD, Thanks, Joe!!

I played "Ring of Fire" from Joe's new CD on "Swingin' West" on Friday and the response was super.

Mark, I too love Joe's Giants card on the album insert. Maybe we can use him in our bullpen this year. I love that team!

Thanks again for some more posts. Chris, the Twangbangers were a lot of fun and we might be doing some shows in Europe this summer. Dave V., glad you like the live cuts. Mental Revenge was a cool band, especially for San Francisco! Mark, I wasn't working that night anyway, but please say hi the next time you stop into Amoeba. Glad you liked the album, how was the Brian Wilson show? Did he play "Darlin'?" I got the idea for that tune when I saw him play last summer at the Greek Theatre in Berkeley. Henry, hello, and Mike Gross you're one of the unsung heroic steel supporters. I read your reviews in the PSGA and I know it's a labor of love for you. Last, my old friend Dan Tyack, I still remember going down to Palo Alto (?) 30 years ago to swap licks, before you moved to Nashville and then Seattle. You've got me pegged. It is all about the song and a good melody, and good hooks. The pedal steel is such a melodic instrument that it thrives on a good song. Combine that with a solid rhythm section and voila, good things happen.

BTW, the album is getting a lot of play on Americana format stations. So far, about 40 have added it and I expect more to come. The tunes they're primarily playing are "Helpless," and "Ring Of Fire," but after that it's spread out pretty evenly.

Thanks for the support,
Joe

Definitely another cool CD, Joe; keep it up! And really making the effort to make "steel" albums appeal to other markets than just steel players seems like the way to go for all kinds of reasons...

Hey Joe,

As always I'm a little behind the curve but I did listen to your CD tonight. Great stuff! Keep up the good work!!

Years ago I posted on the forum that I was looking for a certain hard-to-find LP and didn't think anymore about it. Several days later a package showed up at my house and Joe had sent me a copy of the LP, which I still (and always will) have. He wouldn't take any money for it and wouldn't even let me reimburse him for the postage.

We need to support nice guys like Joe so if you haven't bought your copy of the new CD, buy 2!

Thanks a million,

Jim

Thanks Jim, I appreciate the plug. Also thanks to my old compadres, Egil and Pete Finney. The album is still getting played on close to 100 stations around the world, not in heavy rotation, but mostly on weekly and specialty shows. And, I've been promised some good reviews.

For those of you who would like to hear it, you can try this link to Amazon, and hear snippets of each song.
