Recently, I had the 500k pots replaced in my tone/volume pedal. I did this only because there was an audible crack or tick in the tone sweep that was first noticed by an engineer while in a recording session with my Fender stringmaster. Since the rebuild I found that the crackling is still noticable but only while playing strings and at the high end of the tone sweep. Sweeping the tone from low to high at full volume with no strings produces no cracking. What gives?
Is it the pedal or the guitar? |

If you strum the strings, then without touching the guitar, sweep the pedal, does it crackle? If not, I'd say you might have a bad ground in the guitar, cable or pedal. With the volume up, does it crackle if you just touch the strings with one finger? Again, may be a bad ground.
Try going directly from the guitar to the amp and do the touch test. Any noise? _________________ Best regards,

Mike,
Touching the strings at full volume and + tone does nothing.
Strumming without touching anything on the guitar but the plastic thumb pick then sweeping the tone still creates the cracking.
Guitar to amp direct no crackle........ |

Sure sounds like the pot is the culprit. I've heard reports on the forum that the Canadian pots can have problems right off the bat. You may have to send it back for a replacement.
One last thought....if your guitar has a tone or volume control, go direct to the amp again and run the guitar's tone and volume up and down. Any crackle? If not, it's got to be the pedal's pot. _________________ Best regards,

Are you driving the pedal from a preamp (Match box or possibly a pre-amp of some other type)? I have found that most pot pedals do not like to see that much signal and will exhibit noise. |

Thank you both for sharing your knowledge on this issue. I found the problem within the guitar wiring and pots. |
