OK, with Mike's post and mine on Bill Kirchen, the thought arises... what are your votes for the best truck driving songs?
My votes:
Six Days on the Road - Dave Dudley
Nitro Express
Roll Truck Roll
I'm a Truck - all Red Simpson
I'm Coming Home - Johnny Horton
Semi-Truck - Commander Cody
Truck Driving Man - (way to many to list)
I'm Moving On - Hank Snow
Looking at the World Through a Windshield - ?
Give Me 40 Acres - Willis Brothers
Truckin' - (the Grateful Dead, and I couldn't resist)

The Girl On The Billboard...
Then there's one about Maine highways with the lyrics "If they buried every trucker that's been lost in them woods there'd be a tombstone every mile"... but I cannot remember the name of said ditty. |

Ray, that would be "Tombstone Every Mile" I have a version by Bill Kirchen, but I don't know who recorded it first.

"Tombstone Every Mile" by Dick Curless is the one you're thinking of. That's #2 for me, but "Six Days on the Road" has to be my #1.
I'll take any of those, but add
White Line Fever - Merle Haggard
White Freightliner Blues - Townes van Zandt
Long, Lonesome Highway - Dick Curless
Eastbound and Down - Jerry Reed
King of the Open Road - Red Sovine
18 Wheels A-Rollin' - Betty Amos
Open Road - instrumental by Joe Maphis
and let's not forget
Big Bertha the Truck Driving Queen - Gary Stewart's is the version I'm familiar with

Eric,
"Windshield" was a big Del Reeves hit from the late 60's as was "Girl on the Billboard" that Ray mentioned. |

Don't know who wrote it but "Looking at the World..." is Del Reeves (primary attribution). Did it in a former band---I worked up a steel intro derived from the Reeves version's twin (or triple) guitar intro. |

Phantom 309 has to be there close to the top, and just about any of the trucker songs Red Simpson did with Leo LeBlanc on steel would be up there too. Six days on the Road and Tombstone every Mile as well. That would trip my trigger. Bring them steels up here to Montana I'll make them all black, since they sound better you know. |

"Diesel Smoke, Dangerous Curves" (Red Simpson)
"Highway-Man" (Dick Curless)
"Diesel On My Tail" (Jim and Jesse)
"Hello, I'm A Truck" (Red Simpson)
Steve: Thanks for remembering Jimmy Martin's "Widow Maker". Here's a few of the words...
Just a few more miles and Bill was on that mountain range.
where dead ahead a pickup full of kids blocked both the lanes.
Bill hit the air and then he felt his trailer slide and sway,
and the pickup driver made no move to help him clear the way.
Widow Maker, Widow Maker, only Bill could understand,
was gonna make a widow out of pretty Wanda Ann.
He just had time to think of Wanda, as he fought the wheel.
Then Billy Mack was buried under twenty tons of steel.
One life for ten has always been a diesel driver's code.
That's why Billy swung that Widow Maker off the road.
Great song!

A great (but fairly obscure one) by Gary Stewart:
"Caffeine, Nicotine and Benzedrine"
"Hey little waitress
make my coffee strong
A pack of king-size filters
and a country song
A little box of "whites"
to help keep me up...
Caffeine, nicotine and benzedrine...
and wish me luck...
From an early MCA album (released to cash in on his mid seventies success on RCA I think). Never a single I don't think; I wonder why? |

Don't forget Little Feat's "Willin'" with the one and only Sneaky Pete Kleinow on Steel
"And I been from Tuscon to Tucumcari
Tehachapi to Tonapah
Driven every kind of rig that's ever been made
Driven the back roads so I wouldn't get weighed
And if you give me: weed, whites, and wine
and you show me a sign
I'll be willin', to be movin" _________________ Head full of this kaleidoscope of brain-freight, Heart full of something simple and slow
