In the thread on whether to carery your steel in its case, Basil H. wrote:

Whilst touring Ireland with my showband, the roadie sometimes put my steel case in the truck UPSIDEDOWN, (Strings etc. facing down.)
This resulted in the pickup of my Emmons falling apart and the top plate came off with the resultant unwinding of the coil.

Since one puts one's steel upside down in the case, it is facing strings down when the case is right side up. No?

I have always placed the case bottom down in the car, meaning the steel is facing down. Is this a bad idea, should the case be upside down, making the steel rightside up? Who's on first??

Confused

It depends. Some non-pedal steel guitars are put in the case right side up. If the case is flipped upside down, the keys and bridge will rest on the top of the case in a way not intended, and there may be insufficient padding there. If a guitar is meant to be flipped upside down to go in the case, there are usually supporting structures to keep the keys and bridge or changer from bumping the bottom of the case.

Rules:

When playing it, string side UP.

When packing it, string side DOWN.

There.

I put my guitar in face down, but when the case is stored with the handle on top, the guitar is actually on end so there's no problem.

And excessive vibration such as in a bandwagon can cause the pick-up components to come loose.

A folded up beer-mat place between the strings and pick-up is a wise precaution.

I think that the knee lever mechanisms could come under some undue strain if the guitar case was orientated 'Strings Up'

Just my humble opinion FWIW
