Does anyone have an opinion on this all-tube head?

I used to own one, paired with a JBL D130. Great sounding amp, lots of punchy clean power ( if you're not looking for a rock band volumes ). It worked great with steel, lead guitar. fiddle and even keyboard. The one I had used 6BQ6 output tubes, I bought it from Bobbe years ago. My amp tech said it was one of the best made amps he'd ever seen, " a joy to service" he said. It was from- 62 I believe, covered with army green tolex.

Thanks, Jussi. Is there much difference between this and a 50L15 circuit?

Mike, I doubt, although technically I know nothing about electronics. Soundwise, they're pretty much alike, all Standels are. The main difference between 50 and 80 is the power output ( 50 watts, 80 watts ). Of course there are subtle differences in tone and design between different models because Bob Crooks was constantly trying to improve his amps.

And oh, go to Steel On The Web section and check that YouTube clip of ET doing Drivin Nails In My Coffin, I'm pretty sure thats and 80L15 Big E is playing through.

Thanks again, Jussi.

I am purchasing an S80 head and I am considering having it built into a replica of an 80L15. Don't know if it's a great idea or not, but I'm kicking it around. I guess I should determine whether I like the sound of the amp or not. Smile

Mike, that's exactly what I did. Buddy of mine built the cabinet for me, padded burgundy naugahyde upholstering complete with aluminium trim across the top and sides. Worked and sounded great to me. If you get around doing it, I have a copy of a late 50's Standel catalog with nice pics and measurements for the cabinet.

I acquired a reissue 25L15 and ended up selling the 80L15. Thinking back, I should have probably just kept it.
