The question has been asked and for those who might be interested, one can hear the sound of a song played in both a major and minor key........on the Jerry Byrd Fan Club site. The tune is "Hawaiian War Chant"....... http://www.jerrybyrdfanclub.com/

Hope you'll enjoy it!

That's real nice, I thought I heard a line from Wikiki Wedding in there? The bass is very boomey and the steel is getting way drowned out in the mix. I tried to e.q. the sound but lost any clearity in doing so, can this be fixed in any way at this end or yours. Thanks...

Thanks again Brad........your help is always appreciated.

Jesse this music was captured over the air waves some 50-60 years ago by a radio listener that had a strong attachment to Jerry Byrd's playing. I don't know if the general population even had access to tape recorders at that time.......
This is merely offered as a historical item for those that would enjoy hearing Jerry Byrd in his formative years of music and steel guitar. It was never a recorded studio item so I don't know how one might enhance something so primitive. You are not alone in your comments as another has indicated "the sound was so poor he turned it off"...... That puts me in the awkward position of no longer sharing this cherrished music.........or simply putting up with critical comments, NOT THAT YOURS was. I always appreciate comments from the visitors to the web site; good or bad.

Sound is so poor he turned it off? What a bonehead. Ray, the recording isn't all that bad... the guy should get his hearing checked, or maybe some new speakers.

I suppose people in general could just be more tolerant and understanding; or on the other hand, it might help to give some explanation of the time and setting of the song so that expectations don't rise to the unrealistic.

Just a thought, for what it is worth. However, I do not know how much it is worth.

Aloha,
Don

That recording is such a great example of JB playing Hawaiian style that a Bruce Clark make over would be justified and might be able to clean up the bass and bring the steel out front a little more. Ray, are you saying that there are a number of Radio performances like this one? I for one would really enjoy owning a CD of old JB stuff captured from live radio performances that was digitally enhanced like Cumquat records has done.

Unless you have the talent like Rick or several other Forumites, it costs money. I don't have it; sorry 'bout that.

Ray - Don't give it a second thought. The music is fantastic and JB comes through loud and clear. I'm glad to be able to hear such an inspired performance. Thanks for posting it.

I first heard JB do this on an old LP entitled "The Paradise Island Trio". I love the way he shifted into the minor mode. I used to perform the same arrangement.

Ray, that sounds like some of the stuff I have of Jerry from the 40s. My Grandmother had a disc cutter, and liked the country music of those days, and loved Jerrys music, and recorded much of it. The usual AM radio noise is on most of them.

A friend of mine has made an attempt to clean up this track. The first few seconds are beyond hope but the rest is an improvement. http://www.ukuke.co.uk/JB%20-%20HWChant.mp3

(It is hidden in my ukulele website Smile)

For reasons that I don't understand the hyperlink did not work in the above post (perhaps it does not like spaces) but simply copy and paste the entire URL and you should get there.

Hey Ray and Ray -

I think it cleaned up great. The masters fine touch and tone still come out super.
Please keep these JB oldies coming on the JBFC.
