I have one of those Artisan EA-2 lap steels. As discussed in another thread, I want to throw a nut extender over the original wooden extender that is currently on the guitar.

My question is, will the addition of the nut extender change the playing position on the frets if the same open tuning was maintained?
Or, would the open strings have to be detuned slightly to compensate?

It shouldn't change the playing position of the frets, nor should you have to change the tuning to compensate. I don't see the need to use such a nut extender myself, but have fun experimenting with it.

I put a "golden gate extender nut" from musicians friend on top of the wodden one on my artisan, and it didn't change a thing, it hardly even raised the action becuase the shape is just like the wodden nut it comes with. But it did make me feel a lot better about the durability (i'd have to assume the wodden one wouldn't last long on it's own) and it seemed to give it a bit more sustain. All in all, a good use of a few bucks to make the instrument a little better

Matt; That's exactly my intent. I too don't have much faith in the wooden nut lasting all that long. I'm going to get the nut extender that you mentioned. Thanks.

I tried a nut extender on mine, not sure if it was a golden gate or not, but the string spacing is not exactly the same and I had trouble keeping all of the strings in the slots, tried it both ways and same thing, how exactly should it be positioned, it has a tall side and a shorter side? and even with the extender nut on mine the 6th string sounds very muffled for some reason, any suggestion? I am having someone make me an alluminum nut, I hope that will fix the problem. otherwise it sounds and plays pretty good.

Ted: That's interesting.
In addition to added durability, one of the reasons that I want to try a metal nut extender is to get rid of the "dull" sound that I'm attributing to the wooden nut. (Maybe I'm wrong about that) However, it will be interesting to see how the aluminum nut works. As it is an extremely soft metal, I wonder how much "brighter" the tone will actually be. Keep us posted.
