Here's a recording I did this morning to a backing track of the Herbie Hancock tune "Chameleon". No slants, no harmonies, just some soloing over the vamp.
http://www.soundclick.com/bands/pagemusic.cfm?bandID=440617

I recorded this on an iMac using Garageband. The signal path was Asher lap steel, BOSS V-Wah, Zoom PD-01, Barber Direct Drive, Ernie Ball Volume pedal, Fender Deluxe Reverb reissue, Shure SM-57, little Behringer mixer, iMac's soundcard. I really should have a USB or Firewire interface to the computer but I'm making due without one, so the recording's pretty crude.

By the way, for you purists, note that this was played on a "lap steel", not a "Hawaiian steel guitar". I save the Hawaiian steel guitar for Hawaiian tunes

Thanks Steinar! That was the V-Wah on the Morley setting with a little bit of overdrive and compression. It's a very vocal sound - very Sacred Steel.

My playing sounds a little rushed - I think this is due to soundcard latency and me trying to fix it.

Or maybe it was the 4 cups of coffee I drank this morning

Sound's great Bill...not a real big fan of the genre...reminds me of every 'hip' cop program of the 70's...looking for Huggy Bear and the Jerry Curl with a big weave...
But sure like the tone, thanks for posting it.
Cheers, Ron

Thanks Ron! And now that you mention it, it does sound a lot like the "Barney Miller" theme (loved that show) and even a little like "Seinfeld".

Shake your booty!

Hi Bill, For some reason I am unable to download any of your tunes from Sound Click. Could you download them to the Forum as MP3s?

Roger

Thanks guys.

My Asher is the "Ben Harper" model (the original Asher lap steel). It's much like the Electro Hawaiian I believe.

Roger, I'm not sure why you can't play the songs. Maybe you need to disable a pop-up blocker (to use the Soundclick player). I think you should be able to download the mp3 also to your computer.

That's strange - I'm not a member and have no problems playing any of Bill's tracks there....?

Bumping for those folks that couldn't get Soundclick to play for them. See Jay's post (2 up) with a link to it on his site.

Thanks for posting this Jay!

I like it Bill. Very nice soloing. I like the out-of-the-box ideas you start doing at the 1:00 point and beyond.

The Garageband backup sounds incredibly live as well. The whole tune sounds very live and immediate.

Wanna post it on your HSGA page for all to easily hear?

Thanks Gerald.

I'm rushing too badly on this take to really want to put it out there for posterity. I just thought it would be fun to let my friends here have a listen.

When I get some time I'm going to give it another try and hopefully tighten up the timing some.
