Here's a bit of Hollywood Cheese . I don't know who the musicians are, but the tune is "Hola E Pae" or "Five O'Clock Hula".

I think the guy getting his head slapped at the end is the soundman. Oh wait, that's just my fantasy.

Eleanor Powell toured with Andy Iona in the the late thirties. She and Red Skelton did at least a couple movies together-Ship Ahoy and I Dood It.

The soundman, lol! I ran sound for a club that had a giant P.A. with a bad cross-over, bad monitor amp and other problems that would creep up during shows when I was rotating between 4 bands a night. The club owner would keep saying "just make it work". I was never hated more in my life by other musicians than that nightmare job. Come to think of it, posting here is a lot like being a sound man sometimes, HA...

They don't make 'em like that any more. Pass the cheese, please. Wink wink, nudge nudge.

Hey... I like the Hollywood Hawaiian stuff.

Not all of Hawaiian music is sacred Hula, acoustic slack key, ipu gourds and noseflutes. The Hollywood fantasy Hapa-Hoale material is as valid a part of the history as all of the above.

A lot of Hawaiian musicians paid their rent by working the Hollywood studios.

Ahhh, so sad ! Whatever happened to those GENUINE cellophane hula skirts....just never see them around anymore.
Also, I'm sure it's common knowledge amongst all those who study the hula that the PROPER way to dance is never with bare feet, but high heals ! WOW ! I loved it.
Hooray for HOLLYWOOD !!!

Gerald,

Don't get me wrong. I enjoy much of the Hollywood stuff too, especially when the cheese includes cheesecake.

The wink wink, nudge nudge bit refers to a Monty Python skit.

I know what you mean Bob.

I love those old production numbers. Precision and talent all done without special effects.

Did anyone see the big production number featuring the tap dancing duo the "Nicolas Brothers" from the movie "Stormy Weather". Someone posted the entire clip on the Internet recently and I can't find it. Incredible!

Oh believe me, I enjoy the Hollywood glitz too. It is indeed a part of history. I just like to call it, well, something else.

Hey,

I get it.

It's a comedy. Red Skelton is in it.

Was the steel player Andy Iona or Eddy Bush? A nice looking, 1930's silver Rickenbacker frypan, huh?

Aloha,
Don

Gerald, is this the one?

At the beginning of the clip, the camera pans on the piano player. At that point, the sound man actually turns up the piano mic. Quite unusual for that era.

THAT'S IT! Thanks Dan.

Everyone should go watch this clip.
Everyone should go watch this clip.
Everyone should go watch this clip.

Did I say that everyone should watch this clip?

It'll take awhile to download but it is worth it. Watch the entire clip you won't be disappointed.

The guy who is hosting the video calls it "the greatest production number ever". I have to agree. The whole clip just flows.

No special effects whatsoever. Just pure talent and energy.

If the audio sounds wobbly. Once it starts playing press stop then start again. That should fix it.

Wow, that was incredible!

Was that Louis Armstrong and Lena Horne at the end of the clip?

Now for something completely different, Wes Montgomery and quartet burning it up on Coltrane's "Impressions"
