Never mind. I had a post here, but Ray's comment made me mad for even wasting my time posting it here. What a dope I am for sharing something that mattered to me. [This message was edited by Bill McCloskey on 19 February 2006 at 09:31 PM.] |

Nice one Bill!!! It is such a good feeling when you finally find that sound you have been looking for. Here is my music journey to find the Holy Grail.
My quest started started 20 years ago. Up until the age of 35, piano was my instrument. I picked up guitar at 35 after my divorce and thought, lets have a change in instrument. I let myself become lost in the instrument for some years. Best thing I ever did. The biggist plus is you can take a guitar with you. Piano is not so easy to move. I played in a pro circuit show band for ten years. My role in the band was guitar and harmony vocal. Man didn't I learn some good things in those years. Too much guitar caused tennis elbow problems that I still have today. Probably bad technique, not warming before gigs, nerves during performances which have all contributed to my elbow problem. I have addressed these problems and am slowly fixing the problem. My doctor suggested some weight exersizes with my left hand to help solve my pain. That has worked!!! I am now retired from the band scene. I teach and still play reguraly so I need to look after my elbow. So I got to thinking what about lap slide. My left arm and hand is working the opposite way to what it dose when playing guitar and I have a weight training program. So I purchased an Oahu acoustic lap slide about tweleve months ago on ebay and started experimenting. Good Fun!!! I had a Regal dobro that I have added a new high bone nut too and have set it up for lap slide playing. Much Fun!!!! I did some more research on lap slide reading up all these great topics on the Steel Guitar Forum. I come across a Weissenborn lap slide. What the hell is a Weissenborn? Funny I rememberd seeing Jeff Lang (one of Australia's best lap slide players) play a concert using this Weissenborn thingy about ten years ago and thought to myself, what is that sound, I love it. Further reasearch and I now know a lot of history about the platapus of guitars, the Weissenborn. So I have my friend and luthier making an instrument at this very moment which is nearly finished. I'm excited!!!! I have played a few weissenborn copies and have found the Holy Grail instrument. In my opinion. Did I mention that SOUND!!! I think lap slide is such a wonderful form of music expression. I am so lucky to have a good ear, good music theory knowledge to be able to learn to play this new instrument. What a journey to find the Holy Grail in my opinion of music expression. Keep Slidin Everybody.
Cheers

Bill.........Did I miss it, or have you already gotten one of those expensive little black box 'lectric tuner thingies that will detune any normally good electric Hawaiian laptop slide steel guitar to make it sound more out of tune with all the other instruments in the orchestra that are IN TUNE? If not, you surely want to include that on your "want list". ; |

Comon Bill, don't let a snide remark get to ya. Share what you've found. There are those out there (me me me) who might benifit from your discovery.

Bill's right, some folks can't help being snide know-it-alls and have to piss in everyone's wheaties. If you don't have something reasonably nice to say, just clam up. |

Thanks guys. I'll share insights privately with a small group of you from now on. As we've seen from recent posts, people who believe the lap steel should have been frozen in time and buried with Jerry Byrd have made it impossible for some of us to discuss our passion. I'm actually thinking of starting a small private list for such discussion. I run a couple of them and have the software at work. I don't think a public forum is the place for this type of discussion anymore. I'm not leaving the forum or anything, I'll enjoy the posts and chime in where I can, but honestly all the flavor goes out of a discussion when its weighted down with such nonsense as Ray's post here.
Those how might be interested in joining an invitation-only, private list to discuss the future of lap steel playing let me know. |

Okay, seems to be enough interest in a private list to go ahead with it. I'll try and get it set up this week. One person wrote to say how nice it would be to talk freely for once. |

Damn shame that something said by Jerry Byrd's #1 Stalker should have an impact on anyone. I learned to ignore his lashing out at the world long ago. Let us all agree that the world sucks, it used to not suck back then, anything that evolves should be condemned as a personal affront, let us all die.
Good. Let's move on.
---oh--and congrats on your happiness although I smile and await your next quest.[This message was edited by Jon Light on 20 February 2006 at 07:42 AM.] |

Okay,
we definitely have a ground swell of interest.
What I imagine is a list that you have to be invited into by other members of the group. Whose focus is on the advancement of steel gutiar in all its forms. I imagine reaching out to the sacred steel community and requesting their strong participation.
For those who don't know, a private list such as I'm talking about is not viewable publicly. You have to be a member to view the archives. Messages are delivered by email rathar than on a web site.
Of course Howard would have to be there as the humour editor.
I run two of these for the my industry, and they really work well. By controlling who gets invited, you can really put together a list of like minded folks which gets rid of the mind-numbing debates that choke off any real dicussion. Bill,
in an open forum like this there is always going to be differences of opinion, those that are traditional and those that are more progressive minded. To me, that broadness is what makes this forum so strong, and i'd hate to see it segmented because of a few stubborn comments. Please reconsider dividing the forum like this.
p.s. i also am interested in what your post said, as i am always searching for that ideal sound. |

No offense Bill, but it is exactly that type of post I'm talking about. I'm not pouting nor leaving this forum. I'm not talking about replacement for what's here. I'm talking about a place where people can feel free to post without defending themselves.
It is no secret that many of the sacred steelers read this site but don't post. Why? I think it is because they can't talk freely without having to defend their music.
Remember Bill, I said I would start one only if there was interest.
There was interest.[This message was edited by Bill McCloskey on 20 February 2006 at 08:53 AM.] |

Bill, a couple of thoughts off the top of my head here, in between students...
I think it would be sad to limit your ideas to a private forum, simply because of those who lurk and pick up information from forums like this. I have received many emails - and I'm sure that goes for a lot of the members here - from lurkers who wants to know more about the stuff I do, people who say they've enjoyed the postings here and been inspired by things they've read and listened to, etc..
I guess what I'm trying to say in my own clumsy way, is that I just don't feel it's right to hide you/our knowledge and ideas in a private forum and not share them here.
Nothing wrong with a private forum in itself, but it would be sad if the "modern" ideas should dissappear from this forum.
BTW - I've just received a request about holding a clinic about "lap steel in modern music production" at a guitar show in Denmark, later this year, and I believe it's important to stay visible with these things and don't go away and hide them.
Just ignore the snide remarks and keep sharing, if somebody has a problem with "modern" and "tradition" excisting peacefully side by side and in mutual respect, that's their problem, not yours or mine.
Steinar

Steiner I would agree except that I believe with the current situation discussion is actually cut off and is limited, which does no one any good.
Sometimes to nuture a plant, you need to pull it inside and protect it from the elements.
I think too much discussion dies a-bornin. I private list can nuture some of those discussions without detracting from what's going on here. |

I tend to agree with Steinar. I would not want to deprive people of my jokes, wisea$$ remarks, sarcasm, metaphors, puns, silly photos, and general stupidity. I feel that most everyone here deserves this.
This is a free country and everyone's entitled to my opinion.
Anyhow, I saw Bill's post before he deleted it and I'll spill the beans about his holy grail:

But I think it's time to try. |
