We have been trying to get this great Hawaiian steel guitarist to appear at Joliet for a number of years. This year we got him! We are overjoyed that he will be gracing our stage. It's going to be fantastic!

Mark your calendars - October 12-14, 2006. Holiday Inn Convention Center, Joliet Illinois.

MAHALO for the info, Gerald. Happy to hear that DICK SANFT is going to be the Guest of Honor at HSGA 2006.

Below is some info about Dick.

Florida is home to a small but culturally active population from the Pacific Islands, many of whom came to work as entertainers at restaurants and theme parks. This program focuses on two of the larger Pacific Island cultural groups in Florida: Hawaiians and Tongans. Enjoy ancient chants and drumming, poignant falsetto and smooth contemporary three-part harmony singing. Slack-key artist Roy Pang and steel guitar virtuoso DICK SANFT demonstrate their mastery of two vibrant but endangered guitar traditions from Hawaii. Tongans are known for beautifully harmonized group singing. The Wolfgramms of Orlando pound kava root to make a relaxing drink, then sing a romantic song from a Tongan courtship ritual.

Dick Sanft will be a very enjoyable guest. He was featured at DISNEYWORLD in FL for many years. Dick appeared in Waikiki a number of years ago and played at a HSGA Ho'olaule'a which was held adjacent to the Hilton Hotel. I recall backing him on r/guitar along with Buddy Hew Len on bass and others. Ed Sanft, a cousin to Dick, (who sang and played r/guitar), came to Edmonton about 5 years ago and we had some fun sessions together. Sadly, Ed passed away suddenly about 2 years ago in CA.

As I am travelling, I do not have access to my usual home library and studio just yet, but I do remember the sounds of Dick Sanft from my older collection of LPs. I remember his style of music to be quite original. I am of the opinion that steel guitar will become more popular with wider and more different styles of playing... It will be great to meet him and hear him play at Joliet..

I first met Dick Sanft at Disney World many years ago. Dick's wife, Ruth, comes from part of the country I used to live. When she would return to visit her mother, I would see her.

When he appears at Joliet you will readily know that Dick has a lot of entertainment experience. He will sing and play steel guitar with a swashbuckling rhythm. When he plays steel he gets his whole body into the experience with a few twists and turns. Just watch it. You will want to twist and turn with him.

He used my steel guitar once at a steel guitar convention and I wondered if it was going to survive. You will know what I mean when you see and hear him play.

I look for another experience with Dick.

Aloha,
Don

That is WAY COOL! I sure hope I don't have a big job to play that weekend. We have a couple possibles at this point, but nothing firm.

I've known Dick now for about 4 years. He lives just a few miles from me up in Palm Harbor. I was fortunate enough to play a job with Dick at the world famous Don CeSar hotel down on St.Pete Beach a few weeks ago. We hadn't played together for about a year or so. We played to his and my backing tracks that we'd each created, but I just stuck to rhythm guitar and uke! It was a blast hanging out and rehearsing with him, too.

I really hope to get my trio and Dick over here to my place to do some recording with him, but man, is he still a go-getter! He and Ruth are always going someplace, seems like. BTW, to those of you who know Ruth, she's still doing really well after her major surgery a couple years ago, which is great.

That's really cool he's coming up for the convention as GOH.

Yeah Bob,

Maybe this will be incentive for you to catch a ride with Dick Sanft up to Joliet and finally attend a convention.

When you visit the website above and listen to Dick Sanft go down two spots to listen to a Afro-American steel guitarist playing a gospel song with some "soul" in it.

It wasn't me who got Dick to play the convention.

It was the HSGA Joliet Committee, Don Weber, Wally Pfiefer and Frank Miller.
