Is anyone attending the big Bluegrass festival in Bakersfield next week? The festival will take place on Feb 2,3,4, and 5. Not only is there goin to be some great bluegrass to listen to by some great artists but what I'm really hyped about is attending the two dobro workshops bein put on by Rob Ickes and LeRoy McNees. I'm not as familiar with Mr. McNees music as I am with Rob Ickes, but anytime I can get in on some professional instruction by pros like that, I'm there. Hope to meet some Forum dobro players there too. [This message was edited by Andy Sandoval on 29 January 2006 at 05:22 AM.] |

Cant make that one , but wish I could !
We play the local Blue Grass festival
in Port Angeles WA. every year ! The
last few years we have played Western Swing
& REAL Country at this event , There are so many
grate Bluegrass groups that we figure we better stick to what we do best .
( at least we are in our own catagory at a BG event ! Like taking a knife to a gun fight )
Its grate to listen to all the Blue Grassers
& be a part of the event as well .
Have fun Andy !

LeRoy MacNees was part of the original Kentucky Colonels, along with Clarence White. To my ear he plays like Josh Graves on steroids. Very powerful.
Check him out here! Be sure to check out the time warp of the Colonels (as the "Dillards") on the Andy Griffith Show.
LeRoy is also a fine friendly guy. You'll like him a lot.

Isn't this the festival that they are trying to get together this biggest collection of Lloyd Loar built mandolins.
I saw four Lloyd Loar's last weekend, at the Blythe Fest, and I seem to remember someone saying that they were all going to "SuperGrass" in Bakersfield.
I may try to go, depends on how much $$ I have by next weekend.[This message was edited by Alvin Blaine on 29 January 2006 at 01:03 PM.] |

Michael, check out Brad's link above and click on "schedule" on the left side there. As I understand it you have to do at least a two day pass ($30 a day) and that would allow you to attend the first day free which is when they're show casing the "LoarFest Ensemble". A three day pass is about $90 and that includes a parkin pass too. I'm just doin Fri. and Sat. but this ought to be a lot of fun and I'm also lookin forward to jumpin in on some jam sessions. |

The festival was a total blast. Three days of awesome bluegrass groups, tons of musical instruments to drool over and I attended two dobro workshops, one was put on by LeRoy McNees and the other by Rob Ickes, and I must say that just to sit there and listen to these two great dobro players up close like that was well worth the price of admission to the festival. I'm gonna have to do it again next year for sure. [This message was edited by Andy Sandoval on 09 February 2006 at 03:02 AM.] |
