I am interested in finding any unaccompanied C6 lap steel music. Any directions you can point me in or links you could provide would be very helpful to me.

Did Jerry Byrd ever do any unaccompanied performances or recordings?

I find the notion of playing unaccompanied on C6 particularly challeging, because so often with accompanied C6 the root is held by the bass player (or rhythm guitarist/ukulele player) while the steel plays upper extensions of a chord. I'm interested to see how this challenge would be met by masters past and present.

Of course, the response of "See what you can come up with yourself, Tweedale!" Is a fair one (and one I may yet rise to). But I've already addressed it, so you needn't.

It's unaccompanied Jerry Byrd ... but in E9 tuning:

{Hi to Lo)

E B G# F# E D G# B

Kauai Beauty

Probably not the open string, alternating bass type stuff you were lookin' for ... but it sure is pretty to listen to.

Tim,
Here is another solo. This is Lap 6 string
tuned E6th with same intervals as C6th so
it can be played on either. They will just be in different keys.

What th..! (splutter) Well I NEVER!
No, in all seriousness, I wasn't looking for alberti-bass style stuff. I know that Bobbe Seymour does some good unaccompanied E13 picking (just listen to the last track on Legends of The Incredible Lap Steel Guitar).
The link to Jerry Byrd's Kauai Beauty was much appreciated. Breathtaking. It illustrates a concept that I was hoping to find which is this: in the hands of a master, you can hear root motion without accompaniment.

And Roy! Thank you for those songs. You use some very inspiring voicings, write beautiful arrangements, and I've always enjoyed your playing a great deal.

All in all it seems like the unaccompanied lap steel music is done in lower tunings than C6 (albeit in the same shape). I suppose this is fair enough as having your lowest string a middle 'C' (on a 6 string anyway) doesn't really afford much by way of deep roots.
Then again, if JS Bach could do it on a violin...

Sorry ...

I just read a post over on the IGS forum not to long ago about "solo" steel guitar playin' and a couple the folks were talkin' about unaccompanied steel in C6 ...

And assumed that was what you were askin' about ...

And you know what they say about ... ASSuming

That old, old syle ... I have an HSGA convention video of Elmer Ridenhour doing that stuff on ... like a Martin with a raised nut ... walkin' around the audience ... pretty spell-bindin' stuff ...

I even caught one of my "new" idols ... Hal Smith ... keeping time by using his thumbpick ... hittin' on the bass strings ... playin' McIntire tunes ... in C#m7 tuning.

Yes Master Ray ... a very good idea.

Malequena

Same tunin' as he used on Kauai Beauti ... E9 ... 'cept a big ol' E on the Bottom.

I'll tell ya'll ... right before dinner one night at HSGA '05 ...

As Howard R., Harry D. and I were locking up the Dustroom ...

Harry The Hammer Dietrich ... "Assumed the Position" over his EH 150 ... and treated us to his version of Malequena ...

And I'll tell ya what ... and Howard will vouch for this ...

That was a one seriously amazing display of unaccompanied "solo" steel guitar work .

Good thing I have a long red beard ... cause it hid a bruise the size a silver dollar ... that developed when my jaw hit the floor !!!!
