Topic: Tuning Q for 6 string lap |

Hi,
I am a Pedal Steel player. I have an old 6 string Lap Steel in the cupboard that I am gonna get out and play for a song or 2 at a gig on Sat. I need some quick suggestions on a tuning for it - maybe some kinda 6th, like BR549 type style. I don't have time to sit down and work it out...
Any suggestions would be appreciated,

All tunings shown low to high, work with the same string gauges.

| Not to hijack the thread, but how about on a resophonic? I read some place that C6 wasn't suitable, but it wasn't clear if it was just because the guy didn't want to buy a new set of strings or not. |

I have read that A6 is a popular tuning for resonators.
I believe I have a DVD with Mike Aldridge playing an 8 string reso in A6.
I would imagine one would have to be very careful in selecting the proper gauged strings for a C6 on reso. |

| Damien, I would go with Steinar's stringing suggestion and choose which one of those three tunings according to what works best for the keys of tunes you'll be playing (or perhaps which one you find your way around on the easiest/quickest). |

Addendums:
Damien, being a pedal steel player (E9 I presume?), the E6 would probably be the quickest of those three for you to get up and running on.
As for the reso "hijack", I have an eight-string Beard reso that I tune to E6/A6/B11 and it sounds sweet! I use the same string gauges that I use on a comparably tuned electric, which are a little lighter than used on a six-string to compensate for the extra bridge tension of eight strings. |
