Whats the hottest EFX box .. which one really has the
great reverb's and all the other wild swooshy bouncy
strange settings and is road worthy.
Which ones are the State of the art at this time that can spice up any session or live show. Let me know
your choices.

Any of the newer lexicons sound great. I heard a buddy's Yamaha spx90 (which is now discontinued, but there a newer version available) sounded pretty darn good too. I'm using a pod pro as the preamp and effects and I can't complain about that either. I can't wait until I can really hook it up in stereo! |

If you want a stomp box type the Line 6 MM4 and DL4 are pretty amazing. You can do a hell of a lot of stuff with them, and they can be had fairly cheaply in the second hand market.

I hope I'm not being a wet blanket, but I've owned a bunch of effects and spent a lot of of time hooking them up and tweaking the knobs. I've bought enough 9 volt batteries to power NYC for a day. All the outboard effects boxes (and jumper cables) did was eat my tone.
I junked the stuff when I finally figured out that I can get more sound variation out of my hands than I can out of an effects box.
When all is said and done it's one man, one guitar.

Several of us local yokels here have gone to just simply a DD3 and a little reverb about 4 or 5, and think it is the best sound we have had.
I am playing a Tubefex with Loyd Green settings a little reverb and some delay, a
Vegas 400 set at 12:00 on all settings, on the left chanel.
On the right chanel I use the DD3, set at 11:00 on 3 knobs, and 800 on the end knob, brighten up the highs a bit, use the left chanel fat and the right chanel thin.
A stereo sound with one amp, the guys in the band say it is the best sound I have ever had.
Also I replaced the orig. pups with True Tone, on a 1973 Shobud The Professional, with Herby Wallace stainless strings on both necks.
This is the way I do it after 30 years of looking, I was going stereo but changed my mind after hearing this.
Try a Vegas 400, you will not be disapointed, Jimmy Powell sounded good against John Hugheys stereo setup, and that set me on this track,..

I know Dan Tyac likes that Lynn box and alot of you
use other modifiers to add some special sounds
to parts of songs that need some spicing up.
After looking around the TC Electonics fireworx looks mighty impressive. The Transtubefex is a little grainy sounding .. but alot of steeler's get a great sound out of that box.
I know its just the man or woman and the axe with
a good amp but late at night when the moon is right
some sly sounds can bring magic to a moment.

Here I am again, praising the Lexicon MPX 110 rack unit. Clean, noise free delays and reverbs, and easy to adjust. Also has flange and chorus. |

What do you consider "road worthy"? Any decent rack piece put in a good road rack should last as long as you want. My votes for the all in one would be the T.C. Electronics G Force and the Lexicon G2. The T.C. Fireworx is killer too, but might be overkill for many. The only thing about rack gear is that each piece usually does only one thing best, and since you have to put it in a rack, why not have a couple more pieces of rack gear? Pretty soon you have to have a trailer to haul it all in. Plus, it seems like the majority of players only use a couple of settings on each piece. Hmmm, maybe a DD3 and amp reverb aren't so bad after all.
Good luck, I have tried just about every known combination of rack, pedals, amp, direct etc. It seems like it always comes back to a simple set up. Even my most complicated rack set up is basically a glorified amp. Most of the stuff I use it for is delay and reverb, but I have to carry the rack and two speakers, extra cables etc. So I guess it all boils down to how much stuff you want to deal with.
If all the classic steel guitar music recorded years ago is what we base our tone on, why not just play through classic gear?
This has got me thinking......

RV3 - I just use the delay settings for a little sparkle.
If I had the bux I'd get Line 6 DL4.
