Is there any interest in meeting once a month in the San Diego Area to play some steel?

Great idea Jack. I can play uke, bass and or guitar as back up. I know a little cafe by Lay Girls off Rosecrans, that a music buddy of mine owns and loves to support stuff like that. You have my email... |

"Lay Girls"... I like that. I haven't been in that place since I was in my early '20s. EARLY '20s. Amazed it's still in business.
I'd like to show up to pound the doghouse bass but I'd be embarrassed to twang the steel... I haven't had the time to prep anything up to performance level.

Rick, it's actually Les Girls (Les is pronounced "lay"... French, you know).
Right next door to it is a joint called the Body Shop. It lost its liquor license some thirty-five years ago... just the place for an 18-year-old. Then, if you hung in there long enough, you graduated to Les Girls where they served real alcohol... and some of the fugugliest hens you ever saw.
Horrible places!! I have no idea what they're like today.

I never go in there, but the place is always packed. There's always a few Hula Dancers hanging around outside. I heard if they like your steel playing, they'll give you a free lei! |

Checking in from Ramona. Wish we had Le Girls North over here--All we have is hanging out by the Circle K in hopes of seeing something interesting. A get together would be fun.

Well there ya go. It was only a matter of time when a bunch of SD steelers get together before the talk turns to strip clubs. Man, ya can almost set your watch by it.
So, if your playing your lap steel while getting a lap dance....?

Ok, so we have some interest.
I am pretty sure we can get a meeting room at San Diego Yacht Club. I'm open for other suggestions. Yes, it has a bar.

Hey - count me in! I'd be glad to make the drive down from LB. Weekend would be better for me - maybe a Sunday afternoon? I can play ukulele and guitar.
Also - what songs would you want to play? Maybe we could come up with a list of 10 - 15 songs... |

Excellent idea. I'll do it Sunday afternoon if that's more convenient for everyone. Wives invited? |

Yikes...15 songs on the steel? I know 2. Ok I can sing plenty more but on the steel thats another thing. How about a list of songs from 1-15.
ok, ok, I'll start...Blue Hawaii.
Wives? you bet. W1 or W2?[This message was edited by Jack Knight on 05 January 2006 at 10:15 PM.] [This message was edited by Jack Knight on 05 January 2006 at 10:16 PM.] |

Dick McIntire has alot of easy to play songs in C#m7 and F#9 (Hollywood Hawaiian style). I'd love to work out a few of those songs with you guys. Bing Crosby has some real nice tunes that are nice to sing that have Dick McIntire on steel. I also like hick songs like early JB stuff.
I would think it goes without saying that if we have food and drink, our girls could help with that.
We all have songs, so what we need is the rhythm section playing on the same page. So, we need fake sheets for everyones songs. We also need to figure out how many of us can play other instruments besides the steel, so we all get to play our steel songs (including Craig). If I can use your song on a cruise ship, I don't mind doing the Tab for the bass, uke and guitar comping. I would think Craig would be good at that as well, and anyone else who wants to help out. No point in doing this half assed, I want it to sound good.
Heres are some of the tunes I would like to do:
1. Twilight Blues (Dick McIntire)
2. Aloha Tears (Dick McIntire)
3. Hawaiian Paradise (Mcintire/Crosby)
4. Hilo Hatti (Tau Moe)
5. I'm Pau (Dick McIntire)
6. Cross roads to paradise (Dick McIntire)
7. Hillbilly hula gal (Jr. Brown)
8. My Isle on Hilo Bay (Sol Hoppii)
9. To you sweat heart aloha (standard)
10. Lovely Hula hands (standard)
11. Aloa Oe
12. Blue Hawaii
13. I got Ryhthm
14. Steel guitar rag
15. Sleep walk
16. Hillbillies from outter space
17. red skin rag (Ray Montee)
18. Great Speckled Bird
19. St Louis Blues
20. Your Cheating heart
21. Hey good looking
22. Honky Tonkin
23. Get your kicks from the country Hicks
24. Home on the Range
Come up with your own list and than lets decide on which songs we all really can do well, and come up with as many different ones featuring each other. hows that sound for starters?[This message was edited by Jesse Pearson on 06 January 2006 at 12:08 AM.] |
