I have had the pleasure of seeing 2 great bands from the Austin Area. Dale Watsons and the Lone Stars- Don Pawlak on steel and The Cornell Hurd Band- Scott Wall on steel. 2 very good steel players, man thats a beautiful sound! Both play Sho-Bud guitars. Has anyone else seen them live? What other bands out of Austin does anyone recommend to hear some good steelers? |

Brandon,
Bobby Flores is from San Antonio/Austin, I believe. I don't know if he plays for a particular band - I thought he was solo.
Ricky Davis was (and I think still is) with "Miss Leslie & Her Juke Jointers" at the Continental Club on Main St. He's an Austin transplant.
Other than that, I'm not "in the know". [This message was edited by Matt Rhodes on 16 December 2006 at 09:30 AM.] |

I don't know about bands, but Herb Steiner lives near there.
Herb is a really wonderful player, as well as a great historian. Wherever he is playing, it's gotta be steel guitar heaven for any mere mortal steelers in the audience.

I saw Don P. play with Dale Watson & His Lone Stars in Chicago.
I was so close to Don I could have reached out and tapped him on the shoulder. He sounded great.
Played a Sho Bud through a Webb 614-E.
I wonder if the reason we don't hear from some of these GREAT steel players on the SGF is because they are out actually playing while we are typing? Hmmmmm |

Yea I have seen Don play with Dale Watson 2 times now and have had a couple conversations with him. He is still playing the Sho-Bud. I have a few good pictures of him playing. |

Mike, thanks for the plug.
For the past 11 months I've been playing with my old pal Gary P. Nunn. We were in Michael Murphey's Cosmic Cowboy Band together, and also The Lost Gonzo Band, from the Jerry Jeff Walker days, early 70's.
We're based out of Austin but only play here about 6-8 times a year, usually at the Broken Spoke. This week will be unusual in that we're playing not only at the Spoke this Friday, but also the Luckenbach Christmas Party on Saturday. Luckenbach is about 60 miles west of Austin, near Fredericksburg.
Gary's got a pretty darn good band nowadays, and I'm enjoying working with Trevor LaBonte (ex-Bobby Flores band) on lead guitar, Ed Miles on drums, and Cody Martin on bass.
Gary likes steel guitar a lot and I usually do two or three instrumentals each gig, as well as play a lot on the songs. So I hope forumites come on out and visit when we're in your neighborhood. We work every weekend all over TX.
I do occasionally play and work steel shows, like the Texas Jamboree, the Phoenix show, and ISGC. In those instances, Danny Hawk fills in for me. Danny's a fine player who worked for 8 years with Gary. So there's a lot of steel to be heard.

Sounds like "If you're gonna play in Texas, you gotta have a steel in the band". Ha! Thank goodness! |

I'm 60 miles north. Does that count? Before the traffic in Austin got so horrendous I worked the Spoke, Hilltop, and others, The Hawaiian band played country clubs,Double Tree,Embassy Suites, etc. Too old to fight traffic coming from 4 or 5 directions. Austin is the only town I know of where on I35 people go the speed limit until they hit the city limits entering Austin and then its every man for himself. If it wasn't for the great bands and steel players in Austin it could be taken off the map. Glad to hear you enjoying Nunn, Herb. Hope to catch you soon. cc |

Yea, traffic is bad in Austin, same as Houston. When I went to Austin I took a cab everywhere. But the music in Austin is worth it! Now I cant wait to get back there for a weekend. But I try to catch some of the Austin Music scene when they come to Houston. Dale Watson and Cornell Hurd are my fav so far. Goood music, with alot of steeling. I have been to the Broken Spoke and Cornell Hurd Thursdays at Jovita's Mexican Food Restaraunt in Austin. Two really neat places. Does anyone recommend any other good places to hear some good steel music? |

I believe that Texas is loaded with great musicians; if I were there I'd have to find out where "Randy Reinhard" is playing. Perhaps he's appearing with Bobby Flores somewhere?? I'm sure that anyone that plays with Bobby won't disappoint; as a matter of fact, IMO, Bobby plays a great steel. I just wish that Bobby would sell me that old PP; Bobby aren't you tired of that 'ol thing yet?? |

Like Al M. said, Ginny's Little Longhorn.. not every band has steel, but a lot of them do, and if you haven't heard Jim L. you're missing out.
Another good one right up Burnett Road is Jim Stringer's Jam Session, 1st and 3rd Sunday's of every month at Brentwood Tavern. Jim is a treasure, great guitar player and he usually has a steel player or two around. Family friendly, really a lot of fun.

And right after that's over (about 9:30), go one block south on Burnett to the Poodle Dog. Sunny Sweeney is there most Sundays, starting around 9P. Tommy Detamore played that one last time.

Bill,
I was told by Dale Watsons fiddle player, Don Raby that they play at Ginny's most Sundays. Thats one place on my list when I come back to the Austin Area. Didnt get to make it there last time. |

Brandon - I consider myself quite fortunate to get to play with, in addition to ol' Scott Walls, a number of very fine steel players in and around Austin.
On the 3rd Sunday of every month I play with the legendary Bert Rivera at Artz Ribs on South Lamar, 6:30-8:30. You just missed our show last nite, but we do it every month and Bert is a mighty fine player.
This coming Friday I'm playing at Swiss Alp in Schulenburg with the Kenny Harrell band, which is in this case is actually a reunion of Don Walser's Pure Texas Band. Scott will be visiting relatives out of state, so Steve Palousek will be on steel. He's something else, lemme tell ya.
Saturday I'm at Bo's Barn in Salado with Kevin Banford. Jon Jaffe is on steel, performing a beautiful little operation (he's a doctor).
As some of the others have said, Jim Loessberg and Neil Flanz are not to be missed. You might also want to check out the Cotton Club in Granger. Bill Dearmore plays there regularly and he's a splendid player. |

Howard,
I was at Blanco's in Houston this past Saturday night. Ya'll sounded GREAT! I am a big fan. I actually am listening to the CD of Cornell Hurd, Fanmail: From the Lost Planet here at work on my computer. I got a chance to talk to Scott Walls a bit, he is a great steel player. I like the song you sang, "I wanna be cajun, but I dont speak French", because I am cajun, and I DONT speak French! haha. Looking forward to seeing ya'll again!

I'll do it. Trev has developed into an excellent country guitarist. Of course, his jazz chops are awesome as well. He's one of the top jazz players in town, along with Dave Biller and Rick McRae.

Thanks Jon for mentioning me. I'm sitting in for Scott Walls with the Cornell Hurd Band this Thursday at Jovita's. I play with Cornell every once in a while when Scott can't make it. I'll see you there, Howard. I've also been doing a few gigs with Billy Dee. I have played down at Gruene Hall on Sat. afternoons with Gary Claxton a few times. I will be doing some gigs with Johhny Lyon, also.
Merry Christmas everybody,
Roy |

I play with John Russell in his band The Tone Rangers; mostly private functions but sometimes at Artz Rib House a few other places. He has been playing a couple of Tuesday's a month with Debra Peters at the Broken Spoke. |

Jon, thanks for including me in some fine company....
I've been with Kevin Fowler for almost 3 years now, and, like Herb, only play in Austin a few times a year. We are here next Wednesday at Midnight Rodeo, and Friday at Coupland Dance Hall |
