New member & first message, Started playing Hawaiian guitar in 1945. Hawaiian music is my first love; Hawaii Calls w/David Kelii ,my 1st idol, then Roy Wiggins, Pete Kirby (dobro) and then discovered Jerry Byrd and his sounds were the ultimate !! Have owned many steels over the years, 3 Ricks,a National D8, 3 Dobros, 3 Fender D8s, Magnatone T8, Gibson EH 150 , all sold and gone !! Currently I have a Fender 1000 pedal , Shot Jackson 1983 J B Frypan, 1931 National Duolian resonator , and my pride and joy, a new WEST COAST STEEL GUITAR T8 non-pedal console that I really love and enjoy playing. Am 77 now but still play out, mostly country but I did work with a real Hawaiian group for about ten years and still do an occasional Hawaiian gig !!(My favorite times!) I enjoy the Forum very much since our daughter gave us her computer 4 months ago and I finally learned how to get on and move around !!I am amazed how much good info is on the Forum !! Have several friends that are already members of the Forum and look forward to all the good times !!!

Welcome to the Steel Guitar Forum Eddie. I enjoyed hearing you play your Sho-Bud JB Frypan at the Rhode Island show a few years ago. I also heard you play at the MCMAA show in Boston several years ago.
You might want to check out the 'No Peddlers' section of the forum for lots of discussions about non-pedal steel guitar. Enjoy!

I remember sitting on the floor of radio station WBSM in New Bedford, MA, back in the mid sixties,listening to you play "The Pan American" with the Chislom Brothers and the Country Squires.

As with you,I was drawn to the Steel by that old magical radio show," Hawaii Calls ".
I loved Jerry Byrd,and later on,became a lover of the Pedal Steel also. But Hawaiian

Hello Francis from Fermanagh !! Yes , I have many connections in Ireland. On my Fathers side were the Cunninghams and Rehills who came over in the mid 1800s. My wife is a Toomey and also from the Crowleys and Brattons , all who came over in the mid 1800s !! Thanks for asking !!

| I'd also like to add a very belated "welcome aboard" for my good friend and longtime inspiration -- one of New England's musical legends indeed! Eddie was probably the first steel player I ever saw & heard in real time, so he thereby implanted in me a love of, and desire to play, that bewildering critter. (Not sure whether to thank or to curse him for that.) And as one of my great grandmothers likewise was an Irish Cunningham, he just may also be one of my relatives! I'm 72 and still do my part in keeping steel guitar & dobro playing, alive ,here in Northern N.Y. Up near the st. Lawrence River. I probably ran into you at one of " Jeff Newman's " seminars, in the Boston area, a few years back.Do you know an elderly gent; whom attended the seminar, from your area; he was a special guest that day; He had a home-made double neck lap steel; and any one of we steel players would have given anything to put out the grand sound which the elderly gent put forth on that occasion. Yes I played the Hillbilly Ranch and several other clubs in Boston in the 50s and 60s with several different bands !! Some great memories, I guess ?? I don't remember too well !! You're never too old to enjoy playing the steel !!
