Who are your favorite “Road” Steelers? The guys that are not playing with the "Stadium Tour" artist but who you make a point to catch when they travel through your town.
Or who are your favorite Steelers who are playing on the Albums of Acts that are not Media Darlings or getting “National” notoriety or airplay.
My favorite Steelers to watch on Tour are:
Chris Schlotzhauer with the Derailers. It’s worth the price of admission just to hear him sing the Arthur Alexander tune “If it’s really got to be this way”. His great playing is just icing on the cake.
Josh Grange with Dwight Yoakam. Last time my brother and I saw Dwight, well we didn’t even see him. We watched Josh and Eddie Perez all night. Josh and Eddie really put on a great show. I’ve never seen a guy more into playing Live than Josh, that or he’s a pretty good actor like his Frontman, either way it was awesome. Pedal Steel, Banjo, Tambourine, B3, Mandolin you name it. What a player and entertainer.
My favorite Steeler on a recent/limited national exposure album:
John Neff with The Star Room Boys and the Two Dollar Pistols. I’ve never seen him live, but the Two Dollar Pistols album Step Right Up is one of my all time favorites(because of John's playing), as is the Star Room Boys-Why Do Lonely Men and Women Want to Break Each Others Hearts. Outstanding playing!!!
What do you guys think of these players?
Who else should I keep an ear/eye out for?

Mike Daily, with the Ace In The Hole Band, is a great musician. Their singer, George Strait, isn't bad, either!

Terry Crisp is one of the best. I'm not sure if he's on the road at this time. Randal Currie with Brad Paisley .

My praise goes to Arty Passes with the Kevin Fowler Band. The Kevin Fowler Band is a hardcore bunch of roadwarriors getting the music out there the "old school" way: Beatin' the pavement in a tour bus, the better part of each week. Here's their schedule for the next week or so:

Arty does it with style and aplomb. Way ta' go, Arty!
Keep on pickin'!

How about Smiley Roberts who has made a living years on the road and at nothing but music. Still on the road mostly as a "Drifting Cowboy".Then when home works a local gig in Hendersonville. Talk about hanging in there.Accolades needed here. |

Dean Rankin of Seattle. I first heard this great steeler last October in Sacramento with his band The Longhorns, and what a treat! 9th or 6th neck, here's your man!

I agree with Mr. Fred Shannon. Corky Owens w/Gene Watson is a solid steeler, and a heck of a nice guy. If Gene comes through catch this show. Gene still has it too. At 60+ years young he can still belt out the old tunes, and a few new ones that are staying country. Great show. |
