Santa just brought me an 11 disc history of the Little Rascals. The shows are re- mastered and look fantastic. The backing music is loaded with steel guitar. The one tune that turns up quite regularly throughout the series is Honolulu Baby. Anyone ever tab it out? It doesn't really sound all that difficult. Sure is a catchy little number though!

Are you talking Little Rascals (1928 - 1933) or Our Gang (1934 - WWII)?
The Little Rascals had the great music. The stars of the LR were Farina, Chubby, Stymie, Jackie, baby Spanky, baby Buckwheat, Miss Crabtree. Our Gang had Alfalfa, Darla, Froggy, Butch, pre-adolescent Buckwheat and pre-adolescent Spanky.
The LR's music was composed by LeRoy Shield. One of the 20th centuries greatest incidental music composers IMHO. Go here and listen to the cuts, it'll bring back memories.

Gerald, The Little Rascals! Weren't they great? Buchwheat played a little girl for a year or two. Thanks for the link. There is also a band called The BeauHunks that re-recorded all the Rascals theme music.

"Honolulu Baby" was featured in and written for Laurel & Hardy's (also Hal Roach Studios artists) 1933 feature, "Sons of the Desert." I'm a couple of decades removed from my days as a member of...Sons of the Desert, the L & H appreciation society, but I'm pretty sure "Honolulu Baby," like most of The Boys' Hal Roach-era music, was composed by T. Marvin Hatley. If memory serves, it was composed almost on the spot to fit a scene where Stan and Ollie are enjoying a Hawaiian dance number at the Sons' convention in Chicago--ironic in that their cover story to the wives was that they would be on a voyage to Hawaii, a fact that inevitably trips them up later.
Somewhere there's an ensemble that has faithfully re-created the Laurel and Hardy (perhaps "Our Gang" too) movie music. I'm sure it could be found through some L&H/Rascals website. |

How about some more info on those remaster Lil Radcals videos.
I loved this music, it was for many people
their only exposure to the true jazz / pop music of that era.
Much of the hollywood stuff was more canned
and planned, than what was really happening on the street then.
The LR stuff rings truer.
