Norm is so smooth I could cry. When he plays the Robro I Do!!
I just got the George Jones & Merle new CD.Boy do they sound good. So smooth a clean and in tune!! Cant ask for more!! |

Yes I did play on sing me back home, thank you for the compliment
However Ron the strangers only played on one song on Merle and Georges new CD, and that was (Don`t get around much any more)Some was done at Merle`s studio and a lot of it was done in Nashville.

In my opinion, to hear the best of Norm's steel--thus far-- get the "Live At Billy Bob'x TX" CDs. All the Hag classic are made better than the originals because of the musicians getting to play a lot. Plus, adding the sax/horns and fiddles to the original sound is fantastic.

| Norm:If your still out there...My absolute favorite Haggard song is "Train Never Stops At Our Town" from the Legend of Bonnie,and Clyde..it's the most haunting steel that I've ever heard.Any insight on the recording session for that song?...Stu |

By nature, I tend to go out of my way to play things different than on the record when I'm playing with a band covering classic tunes---well, within reason anyway.
However when I was picked up by a touring band passing thru town to play a recent gig and Sing Me Back Home was on the set list, the band leader wanted to make some suggestions as to what I should play and I told him 'no, I know exactly what I'm going to do'. And I played it like Mr. Hamlet played it. |

One of my favorites originally from that same era is "I Threw Away The Rose", from the "Branded Man" album. Great steel intro/turnaround and I've never been certain, until seeing Petr's great web site, if that was Norm or Moon. The release date was right on the borderline... "Branded Man" was Moon but the very next album, in 1968, was "Sing Me Back Home" with Norm Hamlet on steel. Same year I became a HagFan.

PS: Just happened to recall andother live version of "Sing Me Back Home" on the "Rainbow Stew" album, 1981. That one has a fantastic ending with the trumpets and those early 80's years, to my ear, are the best years for Hag's voice; unbeatable.[This message was edited by Ron Page on 22 November 2006 at 05:43 AM.] |
