Hand the opportunity to see the ‘Ol Possum himself, George Jones in concert last night at the UB (University of Buffalo) Center For the Arts.
This was REAL COUNTRY MUSIC! Well worth the price of admission.
Although his voice is sounding a little tired, it was a good show. Most of his biggest hits were covered in the impressively long 1 hour and 45 minute set (without intermission!). Included were video backdrops to coincide with some of the songs that included a tribute to past country greats (Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings etc.) as well as a nice tribute to our country’s military personnel and veterans.
Tom Killen was steelin’ his Sho-Bud with the Jones Boys and sounded terrific. Since Jones’ fiddle player was absent for this particular show, the fiddle kick-offs, interludes etc. we’re covered by Killen on PSG (which was just fine by me!). They even dropped in a couple of instrumentals during the course of the show, which included nice renditions of ‘Crazy Arms” and “Steel Guitar Rag”, both of which featured some great steel playing.
I purchased a “Live” CD that they were promoting at the show (Only $10.00) However, other than the song list and a very small manufacturing credit on the tray card, there are absolutely no credits given anywhere within the package. I listened to a little of it on the way in to work this morning and it sounds fine (Although, the “crowd” noises seem to be “juice up” a little – but that’s ok). It seems to be a very recent recording judging from the sound of George Jones’ voice. Therefore, I’m assuming that it’s the current touring band that is on the recording. In fact, Alan Jackson does the “Intro” on the CD and I believe performs on the first track with Jones. Overall it’s a decent sounding CD (from what I’ve heard of it so far).

Mark--Wish I had drove up to see him. He is a class act. I wish I could play some of those songs again. STEEL GUITAR RAG--my band would never let me do it! At times I try to have them do traditional but it is like pulling teeth. We had a request for a George Jones number and the band said we didn't do any of his songs. The very next song we played was TALL TALL TREES but they had only heard the Alan Jackson version.
Next Friday night we will be up your way playing at the BUCKIN' BUFFALO. That is a top 40-new country place. From time to time I get a little sneaky and throw in a some traditional. Joe www.willowcreekband.com [This message was edited by Joe Miraglia on 17 November 2006 at 02:33 PM.] |

George is my all time favorite. I have a signed picture of him in my office. I recently insured someone who just moved in from Trashville, oops, I mean Nashville and they worked in the music industry and they didn't know who "The Possum" was!
That CD your talking about was made in 1999 while he was doing a show in Knoxville. He still had a strong voice then.
