Just wondering if there were Forum members serving in the military overseas, and if so, how can we as forum members help you?
How do the rest of you guys feel about this?

I'm afraid that it gets too political too fast because you invariably have some odd-man-out wanting show support for Their Mission too, and then the moderators come unglued and lock it.

No smiley.

Well - I would hope that, if there's a chance to help any of our steel-playing brothers and sisters serving overseas in the military, we could put aside any political differences long enough to make that happen. No smiley here, either.

All Soldiers everywhere have my support - - Serving in the modern Military, given todays OPTEMPO, is a tough job and lifestyle commitment that many will never understand.

I ditto Tim's comments as well. The support does wonders. So do the care packages from home. Being prior military myself, those packages from home really helped.

If you don't get any response here on the Forum (specific people) you can always put together something and donate it to the USO. One of our local radio stations holds a Christmas Card campaign - fill out a few cards and drop them off at the Dollar Store and they'll mail them to our soldiers. All in all there are so many options: adopt a soldier, pen pals, campaigns, volunteering - to show your support.

Always in my thoughts and prayers!!

Miss Lana

Does anybody know about these organizations that greet military personnel at airports?

I came back from an overseas military tour in Feb of this year. The entire 15 months, many steel players from the Forum helped me. I bought strings and still kept up with the stories here. I had my Emmons D10 with me the entire time. It sat in front of my TV in my dorm room... I appreciated all the help from each of you. I'm in the USAF.

I recall a picture of a soldier playing his Lone Star Skeleton. Having a steel there could really change the timbre of the day.
I'm glad some troops could get support from steelers at home. I don't see how politics could enter into it.

A great thought Wally. Hopefully, all the soldiers that want to, have access to the SGF. I'd be most happy to offer any and all steeling servicepeople encouragement in any way I can help.

Wally..God Bless you my dear friend. Thank You from the bottom of my heart. My daughter Lillie {a member of this forum} is suppose to come home to mom and i November 23rd. We don't know what to expect from our daughter. She has seen so much, and has contributed so much. It is good folks like you, that care, and are willing to give to this effort. I have tears in my eyes as my best friend, my daughter returns. I only hope that i can show her how much she means to me, and how much her service means to us all. Thank You for your efforts. May i suggest you contribute to the VFW, or American Legion to help our service saints. Thank You Walley, and everyone else who loves our nation, and the wonderful young people who give so much out of love for us all.

God Bless all our service members. I know many of our forumite friends proudly service our country. We all know anything that can take our minds off of our situation is a God sent. Away from our love one is tough. I did not have the luxury to have more than the basics. I did have my music to listen too. God Bless and God speed getting all of soldiers home safely and soon. You've got to stand for something or you'll fall for anything

...spent all of my time in the Army in an office at the Pentagon; Washington, DC, in the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

But, if I were on active duty now, for sure, I'd like to go smoke a camel.

The USO and other organizations provide us with a lot of outlets to lend our support. I'm not certain of any way to direct your efforts toward a specific individual but a Google search of Soldier Support yields a number of organizations you might find useful.

I had 12 years of active duty, and an additional 4 years of active reserve duty.

But even though I belonged to them and served where they sent me during that period, I never "missed a meal or fired a shot" in direct confrontation with an enemy.

Because of that, I am perhaps overly patriotic when I unashamedly shed tears when our national anthem is played and when our veterans are honored and recognized for their service.

On Nov 11, I will be in the front row when our veterans are lauded at our local Veterans Day appreciation ceremonies. GOD bless all vets and their civilian counterparts who have collectively kept the enemy at bay since the "Pearl Harbor" 9-11 strike.

Right on, Gene.

And the fact that you never saw combat doesn't diminish your service to our country in the slightest. Those who serve during wartime or peacetime can find themselves headed into harms way at a moments notice.

I have had some folks (not here) comment that I make more money as a Soldier than I should..

I tell people: "I don't get paid for what I do....I get paid for what I could be called to do."
