I had to make a trip down to San Diego on business today, and on the way back made a quick stop at Jim's shop. I'm embarrassed to say I don't recall the names of the other guys that were there...sheesh.
Well worth the trip - I'm going o drag my Fenders down for some fun one weekend soon. jim and his buds are great guys, and man did he have a drool-fest of goodies in the store.
Just wanted to post a thanks for the hospitaliy - and if anyone is ever in soCal, get time to go see Jim!
Doh! And if it wasn't so late, I could spell his name right!! Sorry 'bout that![This message was edited by Jim Sliff on 06 June 2006 at 11:24 PM.] |

Thanks for the kind words Jim. It was great being able to put a real face to the name that I see posting here. The other 2 guys were our own Rick Schmidt (a walking musical encyclopedia and true pleasure to have stop by) and a new student by the name of Al Smith. You are all welcome anytime to stop by. Yesterday was one of those days that you dream of- got nothing done but a bit of cleaning and spent the rest of the day just talking to folks dropping in and doodling- tough life! |

I'm the lucky one who gets to live 5 minutes from Jim's cool shop. It's kinda like the steel guitar version of Floyd's barber shop. Jim holds court daily (Tues-Sat.)usually while he's adjusting some steel to play great. I've learned alot about steel guitars since his shop's been open! Thanks Jim. |

I'm loading up my SD-12PP in the truck and heading south in about an hour myself!
One of my students is making his first trip to Jim's shop with me and I can't wait to see his face when we walk in to "Disneyland"!

Not only is he a nice a guy and know a lot, but he's got a great machine shop and we talked about Fender parts...could be brewing something up.
Rick - sorry about the brain fade. Sheesh, I put 350 miles in driving yesterday, and by the time I was at the shop my IQ was around room-temp. the worst part was, I didn't buy anything, for which I feel like a dolt. That'll get taken care of next trip!!

I finally made it down to Jim's shop in Oceanside yesterday. Jim has a nice shop and an impressive selection of steel guitars and related merchandise for sale; he also has a nicely-equipped small machine shop in the back of his store ... and he knows how to use the stuff. But most importantly, I was impressed with just how nice a guy Jim is. He made my wife and I feel very welcome, like family, not customers. My only disappointment was that his Anapeg was "home" - not in the store. But Jim offered to bring it in to the store to show it to me on my next trip down. Can you believe that? I'd rather play a six-hour gig than break down, pack up, haul around, set up then repeat...one time. Can say enough about how nice a guy he is. I can truly say, Jim, that it was a great pleasure to meet you and I'll be back for some of your surgery on my axes.... |

Thanks so much for the kind words Gil. It was my pleasure to meet you and your wife and I am grateful that you took the time to swing by and say hi. Did the Sierra 12 string pickup work out ok? |

May I also add my congratulations to you Jim. Your contribution to the steel guitar community and to the steel guitar itself is exemplary.

This is one store I'd really like to visit. Sounds like it's got a great atmosphere. |

I was there yesterday to get a lesson on how to work on my millennium myself so I don't have to drive te 89 miles (each way) to Jim's shop every time I want to change something. Jim spent a couple of hours with me and refused to take any money.
Gil, it was nice meeting you there.

So far, so good with the pickup, Jim... It's just a spare. Thought I'd better get one before they become even more difficult to come by. And by the way, Mike, it was my pleasure to meet you as well. I did get a copy of your West Side CD. Played it all the way back to Westminster and was smiling all the way home - even in socal traffic. Very nice. And the new one that you previewed a little for me looks to be even better. Loved that Moorish influence....Gil |

Jim, I fully concur with all the great comments. Us steel players in So Cal are very fortunate to have someone like you nearby. Thanks for all of your help with equipment, lessons and just hanging out so that I can pick your brain. Not to mention the bonus of having someone like Rick or Bob Meeks come in while I am there so that I can pick their brain also. Best wishes my friend. |

I wish I could come visit and hang out, but it's a little far.
I enjoyed buying an MSA from Jim recently.
Great guy, and I hear he can play. What a deal! |

I'll be in SanDiego for a few days next month Nov 16th-19th, and hope to make it by Jims shop.
If not then, I will be in town for a week during Spring Break '07, and will make it then.
I also hope to visit the Carvin guitar museum and shop.
Any plans for another Steel Show, Jim? |

Jim, what I think I'm hearing from the community is: you need to start a franchise of stores like yours; but of course you'd then have to clone yourself to man each store, yes, you have nice steels to drool over, but YOU'RE the main draw.
I've sent a growing number of students down to Mr. P for tech work and to buy steels and accessories, every one of them tickled pink. Students with an early ear for tone were tickled black.

There are great perks with having this shop- especially the folks I get to hang out with. I get to see Bob Meeks every week- he keeps me fed and happy and Rick Schmidt most every week- what a player and music monster! Then Friday I got to spend 4 hours with Dean Parks and Saturday about the same amount of time with Greg Leisz! Life is tough here on the left coast~~ |

Hey, John's idea is perfect! And we can put the store in, say, Torrance...midway between me and John. We can co-manage in our spare time. Ahem..and of course, there IS the "employee discount"...
Jim, when should we start interviewing employees?

I needed a switch for my guitar and sent Jim an email. He said I needed to order the switch from the guitar manufacturer. But he also sent me a serial number of a switch that Radio Shack carries and said it will work.
I went and got it and sure enough it worked. I let Jim know that it worked and he sent another email and said he was so concerned that maybe he had given me the wrong number, he drove to Radio Shack just to make sure he had told me correctly...WHAT A GUY!! Thanks Jim. |
