Hello everyone,
Yesterday, I received and installed A pair of Ricks "Nibro" Magnets in my Silvertone. When I removed the old mags, I discovered that the one on the treble side was not even a real magnet! It was a piece of wood, painted silver to look like metal. I found out from Rick that this was not unusual at all! He informed me that the "blank" is sometimes made of aluminium also. Now my question is, WHY? These types of pickups, as I understand it, were all made at the same factory (Valco?) and then put on rebranded gits. Why would they make some with only one magnet?
I must say, that in it's origional form, this little lap sounded pretty good. I've recorded some very nice sounding parts with it. On the song I'm working on now, I chose it over my Harmos Model 2 (a model one w/Stringmaster pu's). It just fit better.
With the new mags, It's much more powerful and clear. Especially in the bass. I rerecorded the part last night and will be comparing them today. First impressions were very favorable though.
I think we are all very lucky to have a guy here with the know how and passion to do this kind of stuff. My hat is off to you Mr. Aiello.

I have 3 or 4 lap steels that only had one magnet and a dummy. An Airline, a cheap Supro, and even an 8 string New Yorker. Maybe they were trying to cut costs.
Rick Aiello's NIBros have transformed these guitars into powerhouses. The New Yorker sounds sweet, clear and powerful. I also put NIBros in a couple of McKinneys and Oahus and they kick butt.
You just have to beware of flying cutlery . . |

Hey Jack, I see your in San Diego. Have you had a chance to check out Jim Palanscars new shop, "Steel Guitars of North County"?
If not, it's up here in O-side. I'm feeling pretty lucky lately. Jim opened his shop about 10min north of me and Buffalo Brothers moved their operation to a place about 10mins south of me. Of course my wife doesn't quite see it that way. |

I know Jim well. He is a peach of a guy and would do anything he could to help you.
I purchased a sweet little used Goldtone lap steel from him, (Ohua copy)with a Loller pickup in it. Jim made sure it was set up properly before it went out the door.
He also put on a concert and workshop with George Piburn (GeorgeBoards)http://www.georgeboards.com/ and Henry Allen from Maui. http://www.henrykallen.com/.
I enjoyed the afternoon: Henry's playing and talking story and George's instruction.
Jim has a great shop. He must have 50 pedel steels and a wall full of lap steels.

Jack, That's great! Guess who's Goldtone that was. I hated to sell it, But I got the new Harmos and already had the Silvertone and needed some $ to buy a Reverend Guitar. I'm glad it went to a good home.

Your absolutely spot on about Jim. One of the nicest people I've had the pleasure to know. I go in there to buy strings or something and wind up spending an hour or two just shooting the breeze while he works on something. Man, those PSG's are complicated! I'd never seen the inner workings of one before I met Jim. Very cool.

Thanks for the steel. I play with the Encinitas ukulele group most every Wednesday. How about you bring that steel and play with us. I would like to meet you.
Todays Pizza on Sante Fe in the shopping center across from the hospital. 6:00 to 9:00.

That sounds like fun Jack. It would be great to meet you. Not sure if you'd want me mucking up the Uke Group though.
Can't do it this week as I've got to be in Victorville tomorrow for work. Feel free to email me about when your playing again. I'd love to check it out.

Hey Ray, that's strange because we have a one legged bartender at the Sushi Hut and her name is Irene.

Hmmmm ... maybe thats why I don't care for wooden steel guitars ... whaccha think Dr. "Kona" ... |
I think the board with holes still has a place in the school. The corporal boarding did wonders for my development. At least I developed a respect for authority. Now just think of what a wooden steel guitar might do for discipline.
By the way, I have two wooden steel guitars. One made of Koa and one of pine, and they both sound great.
Not only do I like the wooden steel guitars, I am an advocate for wooden steel guitar bars for variation.
Maybe if I keep advocating wooden steel bars it will catch on one day.
Aloha,
Dr. Kona
