I have a dark 1953 Fender stringmaster quad I am fixing up. A tuning key in one of the key heads is stripped. My ? is how do you get the key out of the key head to replace it? It is soldered in plus the shaft goes through a hole in the key head which makes it impossible to get out. Also what kind of replacememt key would fit it? Under the first 3 key heads is the date of mfg. (9/13/53) with the letters Babe. Would anyone know who Babe was. I'm thinking it was the name of the person who assembled the guitar. Also under the name are the numbers in red 10-53. I also have a blond 53 custom double neck that also has the name Babe under the tuning head. Would appreciate any help.

Chuck, I have taken a single tuner off the chrome plate. It's easier then it first seems:

Hold a soldering iron to the side of the finger piece (round button) and when it gets hot enough, you can pull it off with needle-nose pliers.

Get the worm-pinion assembly hot enough and it will release also.

I suspect you may be able to find a mandolin set of tuners from which you might find gears that match.

Good luck, Rick

Michael and Rick, thanks for the info. Michael, do you know anything more about Babe Simoni?

Rick, Thanks for your idea about taking the tuner off the chrome plate. I will try it the first chance I get.
