Last Saturday a steel jam picnic took place which sported many great steel players and one living legend. Here are a few PICS for those of you that occasionally wonder how Buddy Charleton is doing. And BTW, he played his rear off!!!
Here we are noodling just moments before the next tune.
As the tune ends, the edge of experience is clearly defined.
He was listening.
I was eating my heart out...
I have about 2 hours of video from this event and received permission to post a FEW clips on YouTube. This will happen when my upgraded software arrives and the learning curve doesn't cause me to tip the bottle once too many times. Please, I'm not in the business of making or mass producing copies, in any quantity. FYI, Buddy is alive, kicking and he does teach at Billy Cooper's on a full time basis.

I was one of the lucky ones that had a front row seat.
Everybody was using their hi tech tuners, but Buddy pulled out a tuning fork. Tapped it, put it to his ear and tuned his guitar. His guitar was in perfect tune. |

Great to see him.
When it comes up on Utube I'll shre dowload it!
Two questions:
What kind of steel is it? and is the picture blurred or was he tucking his little finger under to block as he did until 77 or so?
I remember the tuning fork, and remember using one myself for a time. I've still got the marks on my old PIII from it.

Hopefully it will show-up in the video, Charelton plays with the pinky extended on the right hand. And Gary's right-hand stance is remarkably similar.
Gary sets a good example. Sits-up straight, plays every note like he means it. I learned something when at a steel guitar show he put his bar down for a while and let the guest-singer have some room. He can play achingly sweet and also tear it up with the sound of power held in reserve.
Buddy Charleton is clearly an all-time master. His tone is superb in every note and it is incredible to see the way he touches the strings. The thing that really struck me this time was his gentle vibrato.
At a steel guitar show earlier this year Charleton had a Boss EQ (stomp-box) plugged directly into his guitar with everything mostly rolled-off except some bass, it sounded just like a steel guitar, maybe a little bit dark.
I didn't get close enough to see if the EQ was there this time but the amp-sound was similar. When Gary sat down at Charleton's GFI a while later the EQ was somewhat different (than Gary’s Zum/amp) but I tought he sounded just like Gary Lee Gimble. So Gary, if you are taking requests maybe you could post a clip of you playing Charleton's guitar too ?
And, I'm going to schedule a lesson with Buddy Charleton, check out that vibrato up-close, and tell him how great it would be if he would make an instructional DVD.
