Well, I'll tell ya'.....awe-some,and then some!
He is absolutely electrifying, and I'm talking 240V three phase! If he comes around your way, don't miss him.
I had the opportunity to see him perform twice this week. Once with The North Mississippi All - Stars (a perfect marriage of slide guitar & steel guitar)and another time with his family band.
His tone, his phrasing, his attack, his speed and his energy is nothing short of amazing.
He puts on quite a show as he also dances and sings. His hands are in constant movement and does not rely on levers and pedals as much as the usual player. But he is not about gimmicks. His execution is right on target.
The audience of twenty - somethings were wild over him. If you think that they don't know a cinder block from a pedal steel, I'd like to have their bookshelves.
This young man has THAT gift. Yes,THAT gift that is spoken about on the forum reserved for players of the highest calibre.
Now I'm not comparing Robert Randolph to them in any way, shape or form. You can leave your flame throwers in the off position. I'm only saying that he has the talent, determination, and the genius to bring this most amazing instrument into the forefront of popular music today. Only time will tell if his contributions will have the impact that the icons of the highest magnatude have had on the steel guitar.
See him if you can. If you don't have an open mind about what is possible on the pedal steel, he will open it for you....wide.

Roberts playing Friday nite was spectactular
but what was even better was to see all the young folks go wild over his playing. Robt was out front and in total command of both his instrument and his audience. If he continues on this path he will do wonders for the PSG as a LEAD instrument, instead of just a supporting role, assuming others can step up to bat as well as Mr. Randolph has, with the kind of energy and inventiveness the he plays with.
check him out if you can.
PS: his Purple 13str Fessy sounded great in every range. [This message was edited by Ron Castle on 01 July 2001 at 02:44 PM.] |

Holy smokes... I finally heard Robert and his band at the Gathering of the Vibes festival in Red Hook NY. This is a jamband/ deadhead festival and everyone was amazed by him. Most of the kids had no idea what instrument he was playing but they loved him. He was the unexpected hit of the festival in my opinion. Anyone else see this show? |

I just heard an advance copy of what I think will be his first release. It's pretty amazing.

There will be a substantial story on Robert Randolph airing on VH1 news this Friday the 13th of July. VH1 took footage of him playing in church with Marcus and Danyell, and interviewed him as he walked thru his home neighborhood in NJ. Check it out... |

Sage: Do you have any idea of the time or the program name the segment will be aired on. I looked at tommorrow's listings and couldn't find anything that made sense.
Help would be appreicated because I'd hate to miss that segment.

We just learned that it now has been rescheduled for Monday July 16, 2001, on VH1 on "VH1 News" ... I do not know the time.
You can sign up on www.RobertRandolph.net here: http://www.robertrandolph.net/main/contact.htm to be on the mailing list. From what I understand, when Robert's management knows ahead of time about a special appearance or gig, they'll email everyone on that list . . .

To see what the big deal is all about, go to the RobertRandolph.net website, click on his picture and then on the music tab. In there you will find a couple of real audio video files of Robert playing live out in California. The video isn't great but you get an idea of what is going on. For a midwestern boy this might be the closest I get to one of Robert's shows for quite awhile. Keep up the good work Robert, I love what you are doing. things keep on changing
Now we have learned this from Robert's manager:
"We've just received a last-minute call that the VH1 News feature on Robert Randolph will air TODAY, July 13th, on CBS News in New York at 4:00pm and 5:00pm.
We don't know exactly what time during the news it will run, but they tell us it will be on. It will also apparently be on in other cities on CBS News today, as well, but we have no way to tell you exactly where and
when it will be on (outside of the NYC area).
The feature will be running on
VH1 all next week, starting on Monday, July 16.
Here are the exact times for VH1:
July 16 8:20am
July 17 7:20am
July 18 10:20am
July 19 6:20am
July 20 9:20am
July 21 2:20am
July 22 6:20am and 4:20pm
It will also be running at various times the following week and during the first week of August after the release of THE WORD album."

He's spectacular! What a showman. He is one of the few that can laugh and smile while wailing!
I wish he would post on this forum............. |
