Anyone think they have a "never heard by anyone else but me".......type of song featuring Jerry Byrd on Steel Guitar?
Rick posted the LINK here the other day of one I'd never heard of before. It was just one tune tucked into an olde LP with other musicians. What a GEM it was to get to hear!
I paid $26.00 to get another LP featuring JB on it; Hawaiian girl singer and only one single tune with JB there. Disappointing but great to have that ONE SONG.
If you think you can stump the olde time Jerry Byrd historians..........give us a try.

OK ... I'll play ... but only if we call it ...

Stump Ray.

But before the gloves come "all the way off" ... lets limit these to commercially released material for now.

Then if you start "whippin' me arce" to badly ... ...

I'll have to whip out the "private stash" ...

Let's start with an easy one ... have you heard this particular rendition, Ray ... ???

Akaka Falls

No fair helping ...

Disclaimer: These are for "Educational Purposes only" ... evoking "Fair Use" ... to enlighten the masses to the wonderful steel guitar of Jerry Byrd.

Thanks Rick, that song reminds me of Xmas on Oahu. I for one really appreciate being exsposed to this great steel guitar music, its a great education and a wonderful muse. I live a rather modest lifesyle myself, so hearing these great songs that you guys are kind enough to share with the rest of us is a great treat and what the aloha spirit is all about I guess. Jeff Au Hoy has turned me on to some steel guitar songs in the past that are still my faves. And what can we say about Rays JB tribute site, oh great Kahuna of steel knowledge! Many thanks for sharing, I really do put it to good use.

Okay Rick..........Love your spirit!

Would that be Nedward Kaiapana 's SECOND TIME AROUND? He was the twin brother to Ledward Kaiapana....and the two were great musicians but could never get along and as a result lost out on much, much money.

I think it's a fantabulous CD! SHould be a must on everyone's steel guitar want list.

OK ... one more before I leave to pick up my baby from kindergarten ...

Know this one, Ray ... ???

Kauai Beauty

I bought this tape ... via HSGA ... when it first came out.

A friend, who I did a favor for, recently sent me the same recording ... in CD form.

Go ahead, Ray ... Make my Day ...

Howdy Rick (that's cowboy talk, don't you know?)
That beautiful tune is performed by the one and only Katsuko Okada. I believe she is the lady that cannot speak English (I think I'm accurate on this note) but memorizes each and every word in each song and delivers it with such a rich and beautiful voice. Jerry Byrd always held her in very high regard. I love her music!

By the way Ned's "His Own Man" is a fine CD that anyone that loves' steel guitar should put at the top of his want list. Steel guitar at its finest.........without compromise.

I have both of Ned's CDs and they are great. Anything with JB playing on it is great, as evidenced by this awesome version of Kauai Beauty!

Well my friend........While he did record this beautiful traditional olde tune on his "Steel Guitar Hawaiian Style" LP......

I have a strong suspicion that Jerry recorded that performance in his living room high up on the 7th floor of a high rise facing Diamond Head at the eastern edge of downtown Hononlulu; possibly just down the street and around the corner from Harry's Music? What say ye?

Freakin gorgeous tone. Forgive me for saying, but Jerry's steel makes those lousy vocalists sound like a million bucks.

Sorry Ray ... Try again ...

Hint: It was a very "Historic" performance

Here's a very jazzy version of a well known song ... recorded at a Hawaiian Steel Guitar / Hawaiian Music aficionado's house party in 1986.

It was soooo hoootttt ... that when he changed keys ... he lost his backup ... and had to end the tune.

Who's house was it recorded at ...

Hula Blues.

If you get this ... you are truely omniscient ...

Or you have the same source as I do ...

Rick, I'm dying to know who that is. Sol Hoppii played it in the key of F (C#m7 tuning), but your version is in G? I record copied it in G (C6 tuning) and that seems to work out o.k. Is that the right tuning and is it JB?

Yep ... thats JB ...

His Pro-Arrangement for Hula Blues is written in C6/A7 and is in the Key of G ... and stays there (doesn't modulate).

As I mentioned in that other JB thread ... his "rhythm track" for this tune is so "smokin' fast" ... well ... lets just say ... it never was placed on "my" set list ... ha, ha

Just goes to show ... that when JB let his hair down ... phewwww ...

PS: Re-download it ... I salvaged abit more with alittle help from Sound Forge.

Cool, I got it Rick, many thanks. I found an audio sample on the net just now of JB doing Hula Blues in the key of F. It has some cool hawaiian country sounding licks. I'm gonna bump them up to the key of G and use in the version I got from you. I really like this up tempo stuff and it really puts a big smile on the peoples faces I notice.

Tell us where this "live version" of my all-time favorite Hawaiian song, "Kawohikukapulani",
was recorded ...

How about at Jerry's Ho'olaulea?

I do not know what house Hula Blues was recorded but it must have been a house by the seashore, I can hear the trade winds blowing through the recording.

Aloha,
Don

My god but that guy could play. Every note sounds like he's pulling it from his gut and he makes it shine and shimmer like the sun on a rippling lake.
Thanks for the treats Rick!
Have a Merry Christmas!

You should have seen the expression on his face while he was playing like that. The intensity was greater than any person that I have ever seen play the steel guitar.

Aloha,
Don
